This study aims to understand the characteristics of connection and disconnection among urban nodes that have emerged during the three-stage, node-based urban expansion process of Japanese small and medium-sized cities: the pedestrian-oriented historic core, the railway-oriented old urban center, and the automobile-oriented new urban center. Based on this understanding, the study seeks to derive urban design strategies for integrating these separated urban nodes into a single daily living sphere.

To achieve this objective, the study establishes a hypothetical Nakasendo post-town as a representative model for explaining the general characteristics of Japanese small and medium-sized cities. It then identifies key urban design issues that arise throughout the city’s phased expansion process: the formation of the historic core from 675 to 1868, the growth of the railway-oriented old urban center from 1868 to 1950, and the development of the suburban new urban center from 1950 to the present.

The study identifies three types of connectivity formed through the gradual expansion of Japanese small and medium-sized cities. First, Connection A refers to the pedestrian and commercial linkage between the pedestrian-oriented historic core and the railway-oriented old urban center. The quality of this connection is determined by the physical continuity of pedestrian routes, the inheritance of the historical street structure, and the density of commercial and cultural functions.

Second, Connection B refers to the daily living-sphere connection that links the historic core, the old urban center, and the automobile-oriented new urban center. The quality of this connection is determined by the accessibility of small-scale circular public transportation, service frequency, and a unified fare system.

Third, Connection C refers to the wide-area network connection that links internal urban nodes with surrounding regional areas and metropolitan centers. The quality of this connection is determined by railway accessibility, the concentration of residential and employment functions within station areas, and the functional division of roles among neighboring cities.

These findings suggest that the regeneration of small and medium-sized cities requires the recovery of pedestrian-based historic urban nodes and the integration of transportation systems centered on residents’ daily lives.
