This study examines the meaning of ‘ChamGyoYuk’, a core concept in Lee O-deok’s educational thought, which stood at the center of South Korean educational change amidst the division, political turmoil, and intense democratization movements following the August 15 Liberation. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the meaning of ‘ChamGyoYuk’ in Lee’s thought can provide a starting point for addressing the problems facing Korean education, inheriting traditional Korean educational thought, and finding the right direction for life and education in the present and future.
Lee O-deok was born in 1925 in Hyeonseo-myeon, Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongbuk, as the son of a Christian farming family, and died in 2003 at the age of 78 in Muneomi Village, Chungju. Having completed only Simsang Elementary School for six years and Nongup Silsu Middle School for two years, he studied independently to pass the teacher certification exam and became an elementary school teacher. He began his teaching career at the age of 19 in 1944, one year before the August 15 Liberation, and later served as a teacher, vice principal, and principal in primary and secondary schools. In 1986, at the age of 61, he retired after 42 years in the teaching profession under pressure from the military dictatorship. His educational practice can be seen throughout his life as an educator, researcher, critic, activist, writer, and practitioner of environmental ecology.
The term ‘ChamGyoYuk’ began with Lee Man-gyu’s use of ‘ChamDoen GyoYuk’ in 1946 while critiquing the educational situation in Joseon and seeking a new education, and was later used by Ham Seok-heon in 1956 as ‘Cham GyoYuk’ in his proposal for a Korean “new education” in response to the government’s American-style “new education movement.” Subsequently, Lee O-deok used the term in 1963 to critique educational reality, and Seong Nae-un used it in 1976 during the formation process of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU). Within the KTU, the term first appeared in the 1986 Chungcheong Declaration for Educational Democratization, and since the union’s formation in 1989, it has been used as a representative concept encompassing democratic, national, and humanistic education. Lee O-deok’s ‘ChamGyoYuk’ gained widespread recognition by resonating with the public and acting as a catalyst for the birth of the KTU. Ultimately, the ‘ChamGyoYuk advocated by Lee Man-gyu, Ham Seok-heon, Lee O-deok, Seong Nae-un, and the KTU all emerged from a critique and reflection on the anti-educational conditions of an era characterized by anti-democratic, anti-national, anti-human, and anti-life tendencies.
This study examined the works and interviews left by Lee O-deok during his lifetime and, using Giorgi’s phenomenological method, identified six meaning elements of ‘ChamGyoYuk’: child-child mind, life-cultivating education, study where work and play are one, expression education that liberates life, correct use of our language and writing, and education of respect for nature and life. These six elements were further interpreted into four meaning structures: child liberation, nature and life, criticism and reflection, and self-formation.
Among these, child liberation is the central aspect of Lee’s view of children, as he sought to liberate children oppressed by feudal society, colonial slave education, national division, and the undemocratic military dictatorship. He viewed children as true persons, independent human beings, and people-in-the-making, a perspective that connects to the concepts of child liberation in Donghak and Bang Jeong-hwan. Nature and life forms the philosophical foundation of Lee’s education, emphasizing that both life and education should follow natural
principles while respecting all living beings and cultivating environmental ecology. Finally, criticism and reflection was a common thread in the formation of the term ‘ChamGyoYuk’ and Lee’s concept of ‘ChamGyoYuk’ necessarily began with a critical reflection on the existing educational and social conditions.
Lee O-deok identified the lack of a spirit of criticism as the cause of the wrong direction in Korean education and emphasized this spirit. Fourth, self-formation refers to a shift from traditional, knowledge-centered, rote education that treats children as objects to a life-centered education where children cultivate their innate nature, or child’s mind. His concept of education that cultivates life represents both his educational view and the totality of education, ultimately leading to an education that enables children to stand as masters of their own lives.
To save and protect children, Lee O-deok argued that the most urgent task in Korean education was to revive democracy. He believed that real education can only happen when children and teachers are trusted. His concept of true education significantly influenced the development of alternative schools starting in the 1990s, the small school revival movement, and the innovation school policies introduced from 2019 onwards.
The significance of Lee O-deok’s true education, which carries on Korea’s traditional educational thought, remains relevant for addressing educational issues in the past, present, and future. It offers a way to find the direction for life and education in Korea. Because of this, continuous research and practice are necessary to reinterpret his ideas in light of rapidly changing times and carry them forward into the future.
