Chinese classifiers are a fundamental component of noun phrases and play a crucial role not only in indicating quantity but also in reflecting cognitive processes of categorization. However, for second language learners, the classifier system presents considerable challenges due to its complex semantic classification, collocational constraints, and cross-linguistic differences. This study aims to systematically examine the structure of Chinese classifiers and propose effective instructional approaches from a typological perspective.
This study first reviews relevant grammatical theories and typological frameworks, including word order typology, grammaticalization typology, and semantic typology, in order to establish a comprehensive theoretical foundation. Based on this framework, the study analyzes the classifier system presented in 『国际中文教育中文水平等级标准』, focusing on its overall distribution, hierarchical arrangement, and semantic classification, including individual classifiers, collective classifiers, measure classifiers, and temporal and abstract classifiers.
Furthermore, this study examines current practices in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language by analyzing textbook presentations and exercise designs, as well as comparing them with the Standard. It also investigates common learner errors in classifier acquisition, revealing that learners often encounter difficulties in classifier selection, semantic categorization, and usage stability, which are largely influenced by first language transfer and insufficient understanding of semantic distinctions.
Based on these findings, this study proposes a typology-based instructional model from two perspectives. From the perspective of grammaticalization typology, it suggests a staged teaching approach progressing from form recognition to structural understanding and discourse application. From the perspective of semantic typology, it emphasizes a category-based organization of classifiers, the use of prototype and extension mechanisms, and contrastive teaching strategies that take learners’ linguistic backgrounds into account.
In conclusion, this study integrates typological theory with pedagogical practice by linking structural analysis of classifiers with instructional design. It provides a systematic framework for improving classifier teaching and contributes to enhancing learners’ accuracy and flexibility in real communicative contexts.
