This dissertation examines the Middle Way thought (中道思想) of Seongrim Wolsan (聖林月山, 1913–1997), a representative Seon master of Korean Buddhism who was active from the Japanese colonial period through the Korean War and into the 1990s. Its purpose is to clarify the principles through which his system of practice was formed and developed amid the historical upheavals of modern and contemporary Korean Buddhism.
This study approaches Wolsan’s Middle Way not merely as a doctrinal concept but as a principle of practice operating within meditative praxis. This approach is based on the fact that concepts related to the Middle Way repeatedly appear in Wolsan’s Dharma talks not as separate doctrinal teachings but as interconnected elements of a single principle of practice. These include the awakening of one’s own mind (自心), true emptiness and wondrous existence (眞空妙有), the capacity to give rise to and enliven all things (能生能活), accepting not even a single speck of dust (不受一塵), and abandoning not a single dharma (不捨一法). His teachings also consistently reveal the practice of Middle Way harmony (中道和合) through the non-duality (不二) of upward transcendence (向上) and downward engagement (向下). Wolsan’s Middle Way may therefore be understood as a principle realized through meditative praxis and unfolded through the non-duality of practice and haenghwa (行和), namely, practice enacted in life, teaching, and communal activity.
Wolsan’s Middle Way must accordingly be examined in connection with the course of practice and haenghwa that unfolded throughout his life and in response to the historical circumstances of his time. Wolsan received the hwadu “What is this?” from Mangong and devoted himself to its investigation. After attaining awakening at Jeokcheonsa Temple in Cheongdo and at Namjijangsa Temple, he inherited the Dharma of Geumo and continued the Deoksung Seon lineage. He also participated in major phases of modern Korean Buddhist history, including the Bongamsa Seon Community, practice during the Korean War, the Buddhist purification movement, his tenure at Bulguksa Temple, and the administration of the Buddhist order. Throughout these activities, he demonstrated a Middle Way course of action grounded in the perfect interfusion of principle and phenomena (理事圓融), integrating practice and haenghwa.
In Wolsan’s Seon tradition, his Middle Way thought was concretely expressed through the harmony of precepts, pure poverty, and meditative concentration and wisdom. Thoroughly grounded in Seon (禪), doctrine (敎), and discipline (律), he regarded the precepts as the foundation of practice and pursued the harmony of concentration and wisdom through a life of pure poverty (淸貧) and joy in the Way (道樂). This understanding of practice also became a conceptual foundation for the renewal of the Buddhist order.
The Seon approach rooted in the tradition of the patriarchs, as reflected in Wolsan’s Dharma talks, is expressed in such phrases as “all are true Buddhas” (皆是眞佛), “ordinary mind is the Way” (平常心是道), “this very mind is Buddha” (卽心是佛), and “neither cultivation nor realization” (無修無證). Furthermore, he regarded taking awakening as the standard (以悟爲則) as a fundamental principle and presented the Three Essentials (三要)—great faith, great resolve, and great doubt—as the core principles of practice. Through these teachings, he sought to embody the non-duality of practice and haenghwa.
It is also noteworthy that Wolsan personally inscribed and hung the plaque reading “Junghwadang” (中和堂) at the administrative office of Bulguksa Temple in the early 1980s. Oral testimony further identifies his thought as junghwa thought This is connected with a Buddhist understanding of the Middle (中) and harmony (和) as principles related to Buddha-nature and the practice of the six pāramitās and myriad practices (六度萬行). Wolsan’s Middle Way thought was likewise closely connected with this practical dimension of junghwa.
The essence of Wolsan’s Middle Way is encapsulated in the phrase, “Penetrating beyond heaven and earth, yet abandoning not a single dharma—this is the Middle Way” (透出乾坤外不捨一法爲之中道). This means that the Middle Way consists in breaking through and transcending heaven and earth while abandoning not a single dharma. It expresses a practical principle in which accepting not even a speck of dust and abandoning not a single dharma are not opposed to one another, and in which transcendence and inclusion are perfectly interfused on a single ground. Wolsan emphasized a principle of non-duality that transcends such oppositions as existence (有) and non-existence (無), and life (生) and death (死), while simultaneously embracing them without rejection. He described this as the capacity to give rise to and enliven all things This principle of practice constitutes a non-dual structure of essence and function, in which true emptiness (眞空) is the essence (體) and wondrous existence (妙有) manifests as function (用). Through Middle Way harmony (中道和合) and the vision that “the whole world is one family” (世界共一家), it further develops into dependent coexistence and communal harmony.
Finally, this study examines how Wolsan’s Middle Way was concretely embodied in sites of practice and in temple administration, with particular attention to his tenure at Bulguksa Temple. His approximately twenty-four years at Bulguksa constituted a period in which his Middle Way thought did not remain confined to inner awakening but was realized as a practical principle throughout education, practice, administration, and Buddhist undertakings.
Wolsan’s Middle Way thought can be seen in more than his Dharma talks. It also informed the way he practiced, taught others, and took part in the administration of the Buddhist order. Direct meditative practice remained central to all of these activities. For him, the Middle Way acquired meaning when it was personally realized and carried into daily life. Awakening thus found expression in haenghwa, particularly in his relations with others and his concern for communal life. His Middle Way joined individual cultivation to the pursuit of harmony within the community. It was therefore neither a doctrinal formula nor a personal slogan, but a principle that guided practice, teaching, institutional activity, and communal life within modern and contemporary Korean Buddhism.
