This study aims to examine differences in international students’ settlement intentions according to academic stage and to identify the major factors influencing settlement intention at each stage. For this purpose, the academic stages of international students were classified into four categories: the initial adaptation stage, the career exploration stage, the career concretization stage, and the settlement decision stage. Settlement intention was analyzed in relation to personal, social, and structural factors.
This study employed both a survey and in-depth interviews. The survey was conducted among undergraduate international students at three universities in the Seoul metropolitan area, and 381 valid responses were used for the final analysis. The data were analyzed through frequency analysis, reliability analysis, one-way ANOVA, Tukey HSD post-hoc tests, and multiple regression analysis. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with 11 international students from different academic stages in order to complement the quantitative findings and explore the process through which settlement intentions are formed.
The main findings are as follows. First, international students’ settlement intentions differed according to academic stage. Settlement intention was highest at the career concretization stage and decreased again at the settlement decision stage after graduation. This indicates that settlement intention does not increase linearly throughout the academic process. Rather, it is strengthened as academic and career experiences accumulate, but may be readjusted after graduation when students encounter practical constraints such as employment, visa status, and residential stability.
Second, differences in settlement intention were found according to major field, Korean language proficiency, length of stay, and country of origin. In particular, students with higher Korean language proficiency showed stronger settlement intentions in terms of long-term residence, employment preparation, future planning, and readiness to settle in Korean society. This suggests that Korean language proficiency functions not only as a means of communication but also as an important resource for academic adaptation, social participation, and long-term settlement.
Third, the factors influencing settlement intention varied by academic stage. In the initial adaptation and career exploration stages, personal factors such as academic competence, self-efficacy, and future expectations played a relatively important role. In the career concretization stage, social factors such as social relationships, sense of belonging, and support from the university became more significant. In the settlement decision stage, structural factors, including visa systems, employment opportunities, and stability of residence, had a relatively stronger influence.
The in-depth interview results also supported these findings. Students in the early academic stage tended to perceive settlement in relation to expectations for Korean society and personal growth. As they progressed through their studies, their settlement intentions became more closely connected to career planning and employment possibilities. After graduation, institutional conditions and experiences of social acceptance became key criteria in determining whether they would continue to stay in Korea. In particular, the perception of being accepted as a member of Korean society and the possibility of stable residence were found to be crucial factors in maintaining or strengthening settlement intention.
This study is significant in that it understands international students’ settlement intentions not as a fixed attitude at a single point in time, but as a process that is formed and transformed across academic stages. The findings suggest that support policies for international students should be designed according to the characteristics of each academic stage. Support for adaptation and academic competence is needed in the early stage, while career planning and social relationship support should be strengthened in the middle and later stages of study. After graduation, practical support related to employment, visa transition, and residential stability should be expanded.
