This study aims to examine the function of self-healing performed by artistic creation in the process of reconstructing and integrating an individual’s psychological experiences. Existing studies on art therapy have generally developed their discussions around therapeutic programs, clinical processes, symptom relief, and therapeutic effects among participants. In contrast, this study maintains a certain distance from the methodology of art therapy, in which a therapist intervenes, and instead focuses on the creative process itself, through which the subject of creation organizes their own experiences into images and forms.
Accordingly, self-healing in this study is not understood as a substitute for medical or clinical treatment. Rather, it is considered a process in which inner experiences are revealed through artistic creation, repeatedly observed, and reconstructed within a new structure of meaning. To establish this framework, the theoretical background distinguishes the concepts of treatment and healing, and examines the psychological foundation of self-healing with a focus on Carl Gustav Jung’s theory of individuation and narrative psychology. In particular, this study understands self-healing less as the elimination of repressed experiences than as a process of becoming conscious and achieving integration through symbolic expression. It also theoretically examines how personal experiences are organized and endowed with meaning in artistic creation through the concepts of narrative identity and visual narrative. In this process, the recurring units of experience are defined as “experience anchors,” and particular attention is paid to the ways in which experiences are reconstructed through repetition, return, and transformation, rather than being arranged according to a linear flow of time.
As a research method, this study adopts qualitative case analysis, examining both the works of precedent artists and the researcher’s own artistic practice. The analysis is conducted across three dimensions: narrative identity, visual narrative structure, and the creative process. It comprehensively analyzes the creative processes of the works as well as the discursive materials related to the precedent artists. As case studies, artworks containing autobiographical narratives by Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin, and Yayoi Kusama are selected in order to analyze how personal experiences are fixed, transformed, and reconstructed within repeated processes of creation.
In addition, this study includes the researcher’s own artistic creation process as a central object of analysis. The researcher is not limited to the position of an observer, but is positioned as both the subject of practice and the object of analysis. Works created by the researcher from 2023 to 2025, along with the changes in imagery, emotion, and modes of expression that emerged in the process, are used as analytical materials. Through these materials, the study traces how an individual’s inner experiences are revealed through the act of creation and subsequently reconstructed and integrated. In doing so, it seeks to clarify in concrete terms that the process of self-healing is not merely an interpretation of external cases, but a structure that actually operates within the creative subject.
The self-healing function of artistic creation is summarized through three characteristics. First, personal experiences are repeatedly expressed in artworks and continue as recurring motifs. Second, through visual narrative structure, experiences are rearranged within the flow of time and acquire new meanings. Third, repetition and formal adjustment in the creative process function as key mechanisms for reconstructing and integrating experience. In this process, artistic creation organizes fragmented experiences into a sustainable structure of self-narrative, making experience understandable through the cycle of “doing–undoing–redoing.” Based on this analysis, the study proposes a qualitative model of self-healing artistic creation. This model comprehensively explains the formation of self-healing through the interaction of narrative identity, visual narrative structure, and the creative process, and is presented as a structure applicable to actual artistic creation and analysis.
The significance of this study lies in its definition of artistic creation not as a merely expressive act, but as a processual structure that performs self-healing through the reconstruction of experience and the formation of meaning. Furthermore, by presenting the self-healing function of artistic creation as a qualitative model beyond conceptual discussion, this study is expected to provide a theoretical and practical foundation for the fields of art research, art education, and creative practice.
