This dissertation examines how multimodal features of movie trailers influence consumer purchase intention and box office performance. As theatrical attendance declines and digital promotional media become increasingly important, movie trailers serve not only as advertising materials but also as informational signals through which audiences form expectations before release. Building on this perspective, this dissertation develops a multimodal analytical framework that quantifies visual, auditory, and textual characteristics of movie trailers and examines how these features shape consumer responses and subsequent market outcomes.
The first stage of the analysis focuses on the formation of consumer purchase intention. Visual features are measured through scene count and emotional entropy derived from image recognition results. Auditory features are captured through sound complexity and background music dynamics based on RMS and entropy statistics. Textual features are measured through semantic similarity between trailer dialogue and official synopses, as well as speech rate. Consumer purchase intention is estimated from YouTube comments on official trailers by identifying expressions related to moviegoing intention. Because purchase intention is measured as count-based consumer response data, Negative Binomial regression models are used to estimate the effects of trailer characteristics.
The results show that the effects of trailer features differ across modalities. First, visual emotional entropy has a negative effect on purchase intention, suggesting that excessive emotional heterogeneity may weaken narrative focus and make it difficult for audiences to form coherent expectations about the film. Second, auditory complexity has a positive effect on purchase intention, whereas background music dynamics do not show a significant independent effect. This indicates that rich auditory information can enhance attention and emotional arousal, but that temporal variation in background music alone may not be sufficient to increase purchase intention. Third, semantic similarity between the official synopsis and trailer text shows an inverted U-shaped relationship with purchase intention. Moderate similarity helps audiences understand the film’s core theme while maintaining curiosity, whereas excessive similarity may reduce novelty and weaken the persuasive effect of the trailer. Fourth, speech rate has a consistently negative effect on purchase intention, suggesting that rapid verbal delivery increases cognitive processing burden and interferes with expectation formation.
Beyond the direct effects of individual modalities, this dissertation examines cross-modal interaction effects. The interaction between scene count and speech rate is positive, indicating that rapid visual editing and fast verbal delivery may jointly create a coherent rhythm when they are combined in a compatible manner. In contrast, the interaction between visual emotional entropy and background music dynamics is negative, suggesting that simultaneously complex visual emotion cues and unstable auditory cues can increase processing burden and hinder the formation of clear expectations. A partial negative interaction between sound complexity and speech rate is also observed, implying that excessive auditory and verbal information may become burdensome when presented together. Additional genre-based analyses show that the effects of multimodal trailer features vary across genre groups, suggesting that effective trailer design depends on the type of audience expectations associated with each genre.
The second stage of the analysis examines whether trailer-based purchase intention translates into box office performance over time. For this analysis, purchase intention scores predicted from the first-stage model are aggregated to the film level and linked to weekly box office revenue data. Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) is used as the primary estimation framework because box office performance across different release periods is likely to be correlated. The results show that trailer-based purchase intention does not automatically lead to stronger box office performance across all periods. Its direct effect is not statistically significant in the early and mid-release periods and becomes negative in the late period, particularly when post-release audience evaluation is low.
However, the interaction between trailer-based purchase intention and CinemaScore is positive, indicating that the effect of pre-release purchase intention depends on the post-release quality signal formed through actual audience evaluations. In other words, CinemaScore is used not simply as an audience rating variable, but as a signal of perceived quality after actual viewing. When this post-release quality signal is favorable, trailer-based purchase intention is more likely to be connected to box office performance. When it is unfavorable, the effect of pre-release purchase intention weakens and may fail to persist over time. Robustness checks using only the first official trailer show similar patterns, confirming that the main findings are not driven solely by the method of aggregating purchase intention across multiple trailers.
This dissertation makes several contributions. First, it extends movie marketing research by proposing a comprehensive multimodal framework that integrates visual, auditory, and textual dimensions of trailers. Second, it shows that the effects of trailers cannot be fully understood by examining individual modality features alone; rather, the way different modalities interact plays an important role in shaping consumer purchase intention. Third, it demonstrates that the relationship between pre-release purchase intention and box office performance is dynamic and conditional. Trailer-based purchase intention can serve as an important indicator of market expectations, but its effect on box office performance depends on whether the film receives favorable post-release audience quality signals.
From a managerial perspective, the findings suggest that studios and marketers should design trailers by carefully balancing emotional coherence, auditory richness, textual alignment, and speech pacing. Excessive emotional variation, overly rapid verbal delivery, or poorly coordinated audiovisual cues may reduce purchase intention, whereas coherent multimodal design can strengthen audience response. At the same time, the results show that effective pre-release marketing alone is not sufficient for sustained box office performance. Long-term box office momentum requires that the expectations and interest generated by trailers be accompanied by favorable post-release audience evaluations that signal the film’s perceived quality.
