The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between early childhood teachers' media literacy competence and their perceptions of the educational use of artificial intelligence (AI), and to investigate the moderating effect of cognitive flexibility on the relationship between media literacy competence and perceptions of the educational use of AI.
An online survey was conducted with early childhood teachers across Korea. Of the 304 questionnaires collected, 296 were used for the final analysis after excluding eight incomplete or insincere responses. The research instruments included a Media Literacy Competence Scale, a Scale of Preschool Teachers' Perceptions of the Educational Use of Artificial Intelligence, and the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 30.0 and Hayes' PROCESS Macro (Model 1).
The findings of this study were as follows.
First, media literacy competence, perceptions of the educational use of AI, and cognitive flexibility were positively correlated with each other. This suggests that teachers' perceptions of the educational use of AI are related to competencies beyond technological experience alone. Second, media literacy competence had a significant positive effect on teachers' perceptions of the educational use of AI. Among the subfactors of media literacy competence, media use and media analysis significantly influenced perceptions of the educational use of AI, whereas media culture and creative reflection did not show significant effects. These findings indicate that the ability to critically understand and effectively use media in educational contexts serves as an important foundation for recognizing AI as a positive and practical educational resource. Third, cognitive flexibility significantly moderated the relationship between media literacy competence and perceptions of the educational use of AI. Although the magnitude of the moderating effect was relatively small, the positive association between media literacy competence and perceptions of the educational use of AI was strengthened as cognitive flexibility increased.
In conclusion, the findings suggest that early childhood teachers' perceptions of the educational use of AI are associated with both media literacy competence and cognitive flexibility. Media literacy competence was identified as an important factor directly influencing perceptions of the educational use of AI, while cognitive flexibility functioned as a meaningful moderating variable in understanding this relationship. Therefore, efforts to enhance teachers' perceptions of the educational use of AI should consider not only technological aspects but also media literacy competence and cognitive flexibility.
