This study examines how the transition toward a digital, contactless society, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has influenced drug trafficking patterns and related social discourse in South Korea. In recent years, drug trafficking has undergone significant structural transformations driven by digital platforms such as Telegram, the dark web, and social media platforms. Concurrently, its reach has expanded beyond traditional high-risk populations into the everyday lives of adolescents and the general public. Against this backdrop, this study analyzes media discourse on drug trafficking to identify the structural shifts that occurred before and after the onset of COVID-19.
To achieve this objective, news articles from major South Korean media outlets published between 2015 and 2025 were analyzed, divided into pre-COVID-19(2015∼2019) and post-COVID-19(2020∼2025) periods. BERTopic-based topic modeling and semantic network analysis were employed as the primary analytical methods, while cultural criminology, agenda-setting theory, and framing theory provided the theoretical frameworks for interpreting the findings. Through these approaches, this study identified the key keywords, topic structures, and patterns of media representation concerning drug trafficking.
The findings reveal that media discourse during the 2015∼2019 period primarily centered on international smuggling, nightlife culture, and dark web transactions. In contrast, the 2020∼2025 period was characterized by heightened attention to Telegram-based distribution, organized transnational supply networks, adolescent drug abuse, and specific incidents such as drug-laced beverage crimes. Furthermore, online drug transactions evolved from a dark web-centered structure to platform-based networks centered on Telegram. Drug-related discourse also expanded from entertainment and nightlife venues into ordinary everyday spaces involving adolescents. Concurrently, media framing shifted from event-oriented, individual-centered narratives to an emphasis on broader structural risks, including organized crime, platform-mediated distribution systems, and the societal diffusion of drug threats.
These findings suggest that COVID-19 did not directly cause changes in drug trafficking; rather, it served as a catalyst that accelerated the transition to a digital and contactless environment, thereby intensifying the digitalization and diversification of drug trafficking structures. This study also demonstrates that the media actively constructs and reproduces drug trafficking as a social risk by repeatedly emphasizing specific crime types and risk factors. By tracing the evolution of media discourse, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the changing landscape of drug trafficking and offers policy implications for strengthening digital investigation capabilities, redesigning youth prevention strategies, and enhancing international cooperation mechanisms.
