This study examines how a politician facing legal risk is visually framed in newspaper press photographs. Drawing on framing theory (Entman, 1993; Gamson, 1992), it extends the principle of selection and exclusion—long discussed at the textual level—to the visual dimension, proposing the concept of the "visual frame." The central argument is not merely that new analytical categories can be introduced, but that visual frames demonstrably exist and operate in the photographic coverage of politicians under legal risk.
The analysis focuses on the Supreme Court's remand ruling of May 1, 2025, concerning a leading presidential contender, comparing press photographs published one week before and one week after the ruling. A total of 129 articles from five major Korean dailies (Chosun, JoongAng, Dong-A, Hankyoreh, and Kyunghyang) were collected, of which 81 contained photographs and were analyzed through descriptive content analysis. The coding categories included the subject's appearance or non-appearance, photograph type, accompanying figures, facial expression, gesture, photograph size, page position, and camera angle.
The findings reveal three visual frames. The direct representation frame foregrounds the politician as the central actor of the event. The relational representation frame situates the politician within political and judicial relations through co-appearance with others. The substitute representation frame visualizes the event through other figures, institutions, or symbolic spaces in the politician's absence. Notably, photographs without the politician accounted for nearly half of the sample, and the focus of the visual frame shifted from the individual toward surrounding relations and contexts after the ruling.
These results show that the principle of selection and exclusion, which operates in textual frames, functions equally at the visual level of press photographs. By extending frame analysis from text to photographs and from the depiction of present figures to the structure of subject selection itself, this study contributes to understanding how the visual framing of politicians under legal risk is constructed and how it changes across the temporal phases of an event.
