This study examines the effect of lightness congruity between a parent brand and its extension product on consumer evaluation in a brand extension context. While previous brand extension research has primarily focused on product-category similarity and functional fit, this study investigates the role of lightness as a visual cue in shaping consumers’ evaluations. In particular, the study explores the mediating role of extension fit (closefit), a construct integrating extension closeness and perceived fit, as well as the mediating roles of premium image and trend image.
To test the proposed relationships, an experiment was conducted with 200 consumers aged between their 20s and 50s. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four experimental conditions based on the lightness combinations of the parent brand product and the extension product. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 29.0 and PROCESS Macro Model 4.
The results showed that the indirect effect of lightness congruity on purchase intention through extension fit was not significant in the full sample. However, under the dark condition, extension fit significantly mediated the relationship between lightness congruity and purchase intention. In contrast, no significant mediating effect of extension fit was found under the light condition. Additional analyses revealed that premium image did not mediate the relationship between lightness congruity and purchase intention. However, under the light condition, trend image significantly mediated this relationship.
These findings suggest that lightness functions not only as a visual attribute but also as an important cue that influences consumers’ evaluations of the relationship between a parent brand and its extension product. Furthermore, the effects of lightness congruity were found to vary across conditions, operating through different evaluation mechanisms. The findings highlight the importance of visual continuity in brand extension strategies and contribute to a better understanding of the role of visual cues in consumer evaluation processes.
