The development of efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is essential for improving the performance of alkaline water electrolysis. NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) has been widely studied as a promising non-noble-metal OER catalyst because of its high activity in alkaline media. However, its long-term durability and active phase utilization can be limited by structural aggregation, restricted electrolyte accessibility, and instability during prolonged OER operation.
In this study, a neutral mineral clay-based NiFe-LDH@halloysite nanotube (NiFe-LDH@HNT) composite catalyst was designed by introducing halloysite nanotube (HNT) as an inorganic support for NiFe-LDH. The HNT support was employed to provide a one-dimensional tubular framework and surface oxygen-containing functional groups that could assist the dispersion, interfacial interaction, and structural stabilization of NiFe-LDH nanosheets.
Structural and surface analyses confirmed that NiFe-LDH nanosheets were successfully formed on and around the HNT structure, resulting in a heterostructured composite. The introduction of HNT affected the local chemical environment of Ni and Fe centers and induced interfacial oxygen-related bonding features between NiFe-LDH and HNT. In addition, the NiFe-LDH@HNT composite exhibited improved pore characteristics and enhanced surface wettability compared with NiFe-LDH, which can provide a more favorable catalyst–electrolyte interface for OER.
Electrochemical measurements in 1 M KOH showed that NiFe-LDH@HNT exhibited improved OER performance compared with NiFe-LDH, including lower overpotential, smaller Tafel slope, reduced apparent charge-transfer resistance, and higher activity based on active phase utilization. These results indicate that the HNT support enhanced the accessibility and utilization efficiency of the NiFe-LDH active phase rather than acting as an OER-active component itself.
The long-term stability of NiFe-LDH@HNT was evaluated under alkaline OER conditions. NiFe-LDH@HNT maintained a stable current response for 90 h and retained its OER activity after the durability test. Post-OER structural and surface analyses confirmed that the morphology, elemental distribution, metal–oxygen bonding features, and Ni/Fe-related surface chemical states were largely preserved after prolonged OER operation. Operando Raman analysis further indicated that HNT influenced the local metal–oxygen bonding environment of NiFe-LDH under OER conditions without inducing severe structural degradation.
The practical applicability of NiFe-LDH@HNT was also evaluated under anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) single-cell conditions. Both NiFe-LDH and NiFe-LDH@HNT operated stably at a high current density of 1.2 A cm-2 for 90 h, demonstrating their feasibility as anode catalysts under practical cell operation conditions.
Overall, this study demonstrates that HNT serves as a neutral mineral clay-based inorganic support that improves the dispersion, interfacial characteristics, active phase utilization, and long-term structural stability of NiFe-LDH. The NiFe-LDH@HNT heterostructure provides an effective design strategy for developing non-noble-metal OER electrocatalysts with improved activity and durability for alkaline water electrolysis.
