Objectives :
The purpose of this study was to analyze research trends in Sasang Constitutional Medicine using bibliometric methods, and to identify the overall research patterns and characteristics in this field.
Methods :
Relevant articles were collected from the Korean database (KCI) and the international database (Web of Science). Based on predefined search strategies and inclusion/exclusion criteria, the final dataset was established. Bibliometric analyses were conducted, including publication trends by year, journals, countries and institutions, authors, research types, and keywords analysis. VOSviewer was used for network visualization.
Results and Conclusion :
1. Research on Sasang Constitutional Medicine increased rapidly after the mid-2000s and has recently entered a stable phase rather than continuous growth.
2. In KCI, studies were mainly published in journals related to the Society of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, whereas in Web of Science, they were primarily published in the field of complementary and alternative medicine. The international impact remains limited. In addition, research output tended to be concentrated in Korea and specific institutions.
3. Keyword analysis showed that research has expanded from basic analytical and biological studies aimed at identifying the individual characteristics of Sasang types to more application-oriented studies focused on diseases and clinical practice. Furthermore, analysis of research types revealed that a certain proportion of studies applied Sasang prescriptions without constitutional diagnosis, indicating that alongside theory-oriented research centered on the conceptual framework of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, there is also a trend toward practical, prescription-based applications.
This study is a bibliometric analysis that integrates research in the medical and pharmaceutical field of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, and is meaningful in that it provides foundational data for establishing future research directions.
