This thesis examines the repentance thought of Wonhyo(元曉, 617–686), focusing on his treatise the Dae-seung-yuk-jeong-cham-hoe(大乘六情懺悔). Compared with Wonhyo's mainstream concepts such as the One Mind(一心) and the Harmonization of Disputes(和諍), his repentance thought has not received sufficient scholarly attention. Despite being his only treatise devoted solely to repentance—a brief text of 1,078 classical Chinese characters—the Dae-seung-yuk-jeong-cham-hoe has tended to be read as an extension of his thought on the Awakening of Faith, Huayan, or Pure Land doctrine, or treated as merely one among several short repentance liturgies.
This study, by contrast, treats the text as an independent doctrinal work in which Wonhyo's lifelong understanding of repentance is concentrated, and examines the conception of karmic transgression, the structure of repentance practice, and the pedagogical significance contained within it.
Wonhyo's repentance stands within a long tradition. The discipline-centered repentance that began with the uposatha(布薩) and pavāraṇā(自恣) of early Buddhism expanded, in the Mahāyāna, into a practice encompassing the elimination of karmic obstruction, bodhisattva conduct, and the salvation of sentient beings, and was further ritualized through the Chinese tradition of liturgical repentance and the Silla practice of the divinatory assembly(占察法會). While inheriting this current, the Dae-seung-yuk-jeong-cham-hoe shifted the focus of repentance from the transgression of precepts to the structure of removing ignorance and attachment, thereby reconstituting the inherited tradition on doctrinal grounds.
The Dae-seung-yuk-jeong-cham-hoe is a doctrinal text that embraces both Madhyamaka and Yogācāra understandings. Wonhyo articulated the nature of karmic transgression in Madhyamaka terms—as "a provisional designation arising from the convergence of conditions"(衆緣和合假名), as "originally non-arising in its very nature"(業性本無生), and as "ungraspable in both subject and object"(能所不可得)—while disclosing the principle of its arising in Yogācāra terms, through the sequence of ignorance, inverted view, attachment to self and to what belongs to self, the six sense faculties, consciousness, and clinging to external objects. The two languages are not blended but operate each in its proper place, converging in the locus of the One Mind. The closing references to the "dream-like samādhi"(如夢三昧) and "sudden awakening"(豁然而覺) point to the movement of awakening, from non-awakening(不覺) through initial awakening(始覺) to original awakening(本覺), that takes place in this locus of the One Mind.
This understanding of karmic transgression was embodied in practice through the reconciliation of noumenal repentance(理懺) and phenomenal repentance(事懺). Noumenal repentance contemplates the true nature of karmic transgression and discloses the ungraspability of transgression, of the one repenting, and of the act of repentance itself, while phenomenal repentance involves shame for the indulgence of the six sense faculties(六情) and a turning back in concrete life. Wonhyo unified the two within a single practice, taking noumenal repentance as the ground of phenomenal repentance and phenomenal repentance as the lived realization of noumenal repentance. Moreover, his repentance exhibits a Pure Land–oriented structure of practice grounded not in dependence on other-power but in a self-powered(自力的) transformation.
The structure of self-distortion and self-transformation that Wonhyo's repentance addresses bears upon a universally human condition exceeding any single religious tradition. By refusing to substantialize karmic transgression, his repentance frees the practitioner from the fixed label of "sinner" and this ethical structure shows a universal potential that may serve today as a resource for self-reflection, the restoration of relationships, and the reconstitution of communal ethics. Such application, however, is valid only insofar as the doctrinal specificity and the rigor of practice are preserved.
This study has sought to demonstrate that Wonhyo's repentance, long treated as a subsidiary practice in the shadow of his mainstream thought, in fact stands alongside the One Mind and the Harmonization of Disputes as a central axis of his thought. It is hoped that Wonhyo's repentance thought will hereafter receive the scholarly attention commensurate with its place in the history of Buddhist thought.
