This study aims to investigate how formative actions construct pictorial structures through the principles of repetition and accumulation, and to analyze this process through the researcher’s artistic practice. The researcher’s work primarily employs plaster and spray paint as materials, forming abstract images through the interaction between the physical properties of materials and bodily responses. During the working process, plaster is directly pushed and scraped by hand, allowing immediate responses to the changing condition of the material, while the pressure, distance, and speed of spray application are continuously adjusted to shape the surface. These repetitive actions reveal a process in which forms emerge through the accumulation of repeated choices and conditions rather than through the realization of a predetermined image. The researcher understands this working method as being closely related to the relationship between organic patterns found in nature and the structures of human life.
Although human life in contemporary society appears structured and planned, it is in fact shaped through the accumulation of momentary choices and contingent conditions. This understanding is connected to organic patterns in nature, which may seem irregular at first glance but are formed through recurring conditions and the accumulation of time. Focusing on the relationship between the generative principles of natural phenomena and the structures of human life, this study seeks to understand repetition not as the reproduction of fixed forms but as a process that generates difference within changing conditions.
Based on this perspective, the study develops its argument through the following approaches. The theoretical framework draws upon Gilles Deleuze’s concept of repetition and Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s theory of embodied perception, understanding repetition as the singularity of events distinguished from generality and examining how repeated actions generate structures through the relationship between the body and the world. In addition, the works of Sol LeWitt and Eva Hesse are analyzed to explore how repetition forms structures through two different modes: the execution of conceptual rules and the accumulation of material and bodily actions. Through these discussions, repetition is understood not as a mechanism that preserves identity but as a principle that generates difference through the intervention of conditions and time.
The significance of this study lies in extending these generative principles of repetition into artistic practice. Rather than establishing a predetermined image, the researcher allows the pictorial structure to emerge through the accumulation of repeated actions and choices in response to materials that are highly sensitive to bodily interaction. In particular, repetitive formative actions derived from Deleuze’s concept of repetition reveal temporality as material traces on the surface. The thickness and relief of plaster, as well as the layered colors of spray paint, appear as accumulations of individual actions, creating structures in which multiple temporal layers overlap beyond the state of a single image. Such structures do not possess a fixed center or a completed form; instead, they remain in a fluid state that encourages the viewer’s gaze to circulate and linger.
Furthermore, within the exhibition space, the works are presented not as isolated outcomes but as interconnected elements that form relationships through varying scales and densities, expanding into a continuous flow. Rather than focusing on a single work, viewers move throughout the space and experience the diverse variations of repetitive formative actions. In this way, the exhibition demonstrates how the structures of repetition and accumulation extend beyond individual surfaces into spatial experience.
In conclusion, this study demonstrates that repetition and accumulation function as generative principles in the formation of artistic structures. It further suggests that the researcher’s work reveals the structure of unfinished temporality through the accumulation of repetitive actions and momentary choices, emphasizing artistic formation as an ongoing process rather than a completed result.
