This study is a hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry exploring the
art therapy experiences of a child with peer relationship difficulties, aiming to examine the experiences revealed throughout the art therapy process and to understand their meanings and essence.
The research participant was a 13-year-old male student experiencing difficulties in peer relationships, who underwent a total of 41 art therapy sessions from April 2025 to April 2026, held once per week with each session lasting 60 to 100 minutes. The art therapy program was structured around four sequential stages — relaxation, exploration, change, and integration — and was tailored to the individual characteristics of the client.
For the purposes of this study, the researcher collected session journals, photographs of artworks, interview records with the research participant, counseling records with the participant's mother, and a comprehensive psychological assessment report. Audio recordings of each art therapy session were transcribed verbatim. The collected data were analyzed based on van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological research process and meaning unit categorization.
The findings revealed 331 meaning units within the art therapy experiences of the child with peer relationship difficulties. These were organized into 8 superordinate themes and 17 subordinate themes: Becoming Aware of One's Inner State, Pursuing Individuality, Becoming One's Own Steadfast Supporter, Accepting, Caring, Forming Relationships, Rejecting and Distancing, and Repeating and Persisting. Furthermore, the researcher sought to approach the essential meanings of the experiences by analyzing their phenomenological characteristics along the axes of lived spatiality, lived corporeality, lived temporality, and lived relationality. As a result, lived spatiality emerged as A Secret Practice Space for Accepting Oneself and Others; lived corporeality as Reconnecting with the World by Breaking Free from Isolation; lived temporality as Time Accumulated through Attempts and Efforts toward Change and Growth; and lived relationality as A Relationship That Encourages Rather Than Burdens.
A comprehensive examination of the superordinate themes and phenomenological characteristics derived from the participant's experiences revealed that the essence of the art therapy experiences of a child with peer relationship difficulties can be broadly understood in terms of three dimensions: the pursuit of self-uniqueness, the cultivation of adaptability to the external world, and an active attitude and agency. In other words, the art therapy experiences of a child who had encountered difficulties in peer relationships can be understood as a process of moving beyond a state of dependence on external standards, recovering the capacity to form meaningful relationships through the expression of one's own thoughts and emotions, and actively exploring ways to exist as oneself in harmony with the external world — including peer relationships. These findings also highlight the clinical significance of restoring the client's sense of agency within the art therapy context.
This study holds academic significance in that it approached the essence of lived experience — which is difficult to capture through empirical methods — by employing a phenomenological research methodology to investigate the research questions. It further carries clinical significance in that it sought to establish a practical foundation through which practitioners in relevant fields can develop a deeper understanding of clients’lived experiences and foster mutual growth within the therapeutic relationship.
