This study examined whether pupillary responses measured during a Comparison Question Test (CQT)-based polygraph examination can serve as a supplementary psychophysiological indicator for deception detection. Conventional polygraph examinations primarily infer truthfulness from autonomic nervous system responses, including electrodermal activity, respiration, and cardiovascular activity. In contrast, pupillary responses may provide additional information by reflecting not only emotional arousal but also the cognitive effort and attentional control required during deceptive responding.
Participants were assigned to either a truthful or deceptive condition based on whether they had committed a mock cheating task. All participants subsequently completed three repeated CQT-based polygraph examinations consisting of 11 questions, with their pupillary responses recorded. Pupil response amplitude was calculated as the difference between the pupil diameter at the onset of the verbal response and the maximum pupil diameter observed within five seconds after the response. Mean pupillary responses to comparison questions (CQ) and relevant questions (RQ) were compared, and session-level C-R pupillary response difference scores were computed for analysis.
The results showed that participants in the truthful condition exhibited larger pupillary responses to comparison questions than to relevant questions, whereas participants in the deceptive condition showed the opposite pattern. Multilevel analysis further revealed that the deceptive condition demonstrated significantly smaller C-R pupillary response difference scores than the truthful condition. These findings suggest that pupillary responses may provide more stable discrimination when interpreted as the relative difference between comparison and relevant questions across repeated question sets rather than as responses to individual questions. Although the direction of pupillary responses partially corresponded with the actual truthfulness condition, it was not significantly associated with conventional polygraph decisions based on examiner agreement. Nevertheless, several inconclusive cases showed pupillary response patterns consistent with the actual condition, suggesting that pupillary responses may provide supplementary information when conventional polygraph interpretations remain uncertain.
Overall, pupillary responses observed during the CQT procedure appear to reflect cognitive and psychophysiological differences in the processing of comparison and relevant questions according to truthfulness. Unlike conventional polygraph measures, which primarily capture emotional arousal, pupillary responses may additionally reflect the cognitive demands associated with deception, thereby providing meaningful implications for forensic psychology. However, the present findings should not be interpreted to support pupillary responses as an independent method for deception detection. Rather, this study demonstrates the potential of pupillary responses as a quantitative supplementary psychophysiological indicator that may complement conventional polygraph examinations. Further research is needed to establish their measurement validity, procedural standardization, potential sources of error, and evidential value.
