This study aims to explore the interactive relationship among platform algorithms, emotional experiences, and the construction of user identity in the production and consumption of sports documentaries on Netflix. Specifically, the study was conducted in two parts. The first part employed content analysis to examine the content characteristics of Netflix sports documentaries, including thematic categories, types of challenges, narrative structures, gender representation, and regional distribution. The second part used in-depth interviews to analyze how users interact with emotional experiences and platform recommendation algorithms in the formation of sports fan identity, as well as how emotional resonance influences their reception and interpretation of sports documentaries.Methodologically, this study combined content analysis and in-depth interviews. The content analysis examined 98 sports documentaries released on Netflix between 2017 and 2025. The in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 users who had watched these documentaries, with a focus on exploring the intersection between their emotional experiences and personal experiences. By combining these two methods, this study seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the narrative characteristics and representational patterns embedded in sports documentaries, while also examining how users’ emotional experiences and sports fan identities are formed and constructed within the contemporary platform environment. The findings indicate that Netflix sports documentaries, in the process of global distribution, continue to reinforce cultural narratives centered on the United States and Europe, while platform algorithms play a significant role in structuring emotional experiences. The results also reveal that users construct their sports fan identities through emotional resonance and personal experiences, and that platform recommendation systems further shape their viewing experiences in increasingly personalized ways. The significance of this study lies in its examination of how platform algorithms structure emotional experiences, how gender and regional representations differ, and how these differences influence users’ reception and interpretation. This study makes a meaningful academic contribution to the fields of sports media, platform algorithms, and user culture studies. It also offers a new perspective for analyzing the emotional strategies, gender representation, and cultural politics of sports content within platform-based media environments.
