This paper aims to analyze the performative use of objects and explore their potentials and limitations. To achieve this, I focus on the objects featured in Jaha Koo’s Hamartia Trilogy, analyzing their meanings and performative characteristics. The results of this study are as follows. First, by incorporating robot objects as performers in the play, this study confirms that the inherent expressive styles of theater are diversely expanded. Second, another distinctive feature of this work is that it introduces objects and transforms them into ‘actors,’ thereby maximizing theatrical performativity—namely, the dramatic effects achieved through physical and verbal expressions. This demonstrates the crucial role played by objects as a dramatic compositional device, heightening audience immersion. Third, this study reveals how the demedialization characteristics of new media manifest through the expansion of spatiality, and further confirms how the actors on stage are integrated into this expanded media space to interact with video and digital characters. In contemporary theater today, the performative nature of objects transcends mere props, enabling them to play an autonomous role in driving the development and emotional flow of the play. Furthermore, the blurring of barriers between actors and objects suggests that objects can make a core contribution to conveying emotions and deepening the connection with the audience.
