As contemporary society faces intensifying demands for carbon neutrality and energy conservation, interest in improving the energy performance of buildings continues to grow. In particular, urban high-rise buildings—characterized by large envelope areas and concentrated energy consumption—have heightened the need for energy-generating technologies that utilize the building envelope. Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV), which generates energy as an integral part of the building envelope, has attracted considerable attention; however, conventional applications have remained centered on technical performance and have shown limitations in their integration with architectural design. Moreover, as most installations are confined to rooftops, securing an adequate energy self-sufficiency rate is difficult in dense urban areas with limited site space. Accordingly, this study proposes a facade design methodology for BIPV curtain wall systems that considers performance and design in an integrated manner, simultaneously satisfying energy performance and architectural aesthetics.
BIPV curtain wall design can be defined as a design method that, beyond mere energy generation, simultaneously enhances functional and environmental performance through integration with the building envelope—“an integrated system that performs an energy-generating function as part of the building envelope while also acting as an architectural design element.” This enables a composite approach that endows existing curtain wall buildings with energy-generating capability while improving the design of their envelopes.
To this end, the study examined the characteristics of BIPV technologies and curtain wall systems as well as green building certification systems, and organized the directions of facade design into three aspects: diversification of facade types, performance -oriented optimization, and design integration. Through domestic and international case studies, it derived key design variables, including orientation-based placement strategies, floor-by-floor gradation of light transmittance, and module configuration methods.
Furthermore, by recognizing the BIPV curtain wall as a building -envelope design element rather than mere equipment, the study newly systematized facade application types into three categories—affective and communicative design, landscape facade design, and intelligent convergence design—and proposed customized design guidelines reflecting Korea's climate zones and building uses. In addition, it established AI smart-convergence types such as power-generation forecasting, digital twins, reinforcement–learning -based control, generative design, and smart-grid integration, thereby constructing a closed-loop, data-driven integrated design framework spanning the entire life cycle from planning through operation and maintenance.
In conclusion, by establishing the interrelationships among energy generation, the indoor environment, and facade design, this study presents a new method of building envelope design that goes beyond simple photovoltaic application, redefining the BIPV curtain wall from a passive cladding material into an intelligent energy-integration platform. As an integrated design strategy that simultaneously enhances the energy performance and architectural value of existing curtain wall buildings, it aims to present directions and methods applicable to future sustainable architectural design.
