Florin Deleanu, 「Notes on the Textual History of the Laṅkāvatārasūtra~Part Two~」(2025, pp. 3-4).
Schmithausen, Ālayavijñāna Vol.Ⅰ-Ⅱ(1987).

This study investigates the epistemological deconstruction and the practical progression of spiritual praxis inherent in the Laṅkāvatārasūtra (『楞伽經』, hereafter LAS). The primary objective is to investigate the sutra’s core principle, “mind-only manifestation” (svacittadṛśyamātra), not as a theoretical proposition, but as a practical necessity that leads to the ‘transformation of the basis’ (āśrayaparāvṛtti) through the thorough examination (parijñāna) of deluded mind (vikalpa). Reflecting the literary characteristics of the text, which underwent gradual expansion and structural revision from the late 4th to the 7th century, this research analyzes its diachronic formation while meticulously tracing the philosophical structure through which the LAS reconstructs the doctrinal framework — the three natures (svabhāvatraya), the five dharmas (pañcadharma), the eight consciousnesses (aṣṭavijñāna), and the two selflessnesses (nairātmyadvaya) — within the unified field of svacittadṛśyamātra.
In particular, by integrating the foundational depth of the storehouse consciousness(ālayavijñāna) with the essential purity of the tathāgatagarbha, the sutra occupies a unique philosophical position within Yogācāra doctrine, serving as the core mechanism for a positive restorative praxis that declares the waves of defiled consciousness to be the ocean of pure wisdom. Furthermore, by interpreting “Laṅkā” in the title not merely as a geographical entity, but as a deliberate hermeneutic device — employing nirukti (etymological interpretation) to signify the fortress-like impregnable nature of consciousness (vijñāna) and its subsequent transcendence — this study executes a hermeneutic leap. It identifies “Laṅkā” as the epistemologically impregnable fortress that the practitioner must deconstruct. Through this approach, the title itself is revealed as a practical directive, urging the practitioner to transcend the boundaries of their own discrimination through the paradoxical interplay between a-laṅghya (the impassable) and √laṅgh (the leap/traversal).
To concretize this research, the study defines the second chapter of the LAS, the chapter on the ‘Collection of All Teachings of the 36,000 [Verses]’ as its core scope of research. It adopts the Nanjio’s edition(as the base text, LAS) while comparing it with the NGMPP A112-9(D) manuscript to examine variant readings. Moreover, it ensures philological rigor by precisely comparing the Tibetan translation(T1), the commentary of Jñānaśrībhadra (Jś), and the Chinese translations of Guṇabhadra(Ch1), Bodhiruci(Ch2), and Śikṣānanda(Ch3) to trace doctrinal shifts during the transmission process. This research takes the constructive principle of the "bodies of names, phrases, and letters" (nāmapadavyañjanakāya) — the linguistic structures that constitute cognition — as the starting point for deconstructive analysis. It analyzes the syntactic mechanism by which these linguistic constructions establish the world of discrimination, elucidating how the sutra moves beyond simple rhetoric to solidify the practitioner's cognition within the hypothetical system of svacittadṛśyamātra.
On this theoretical foundation, the study utilizes the consciousness structural theories of Schmithausen and W. Waldron to analyze the manifestation structure of the "body, enjoyment, and base" (dehabhogapratiṣṭhā). It argues in detail for the practical mechanism by which the principle of appropriation (upādāna) of the ālayavijñāna connects to the āśrayaparāvṛtti, thereby facilitating the replacement of the defiled ālayavijñāna through the transformation of the basis. In particular, it examines the "non-arising" (anutpāda) position as a doctrinal defense mechanism employed by the text to ensure that the analysis of svacittadṛśyamātra deconstructs realism regarding external objects without falling into nihilism, and refines the logic of transforming the early Yogācāra system of five dharmas into a practical mechanism for overcoming the deluded discrimination.
In conclusion, this paper clarifies the practical breakthrough provided by the LAS, transcending the doctrinal consistency of traditional Yogācāra studies, through the syntactic and philosophical analysis of 'The Study of Svacittadṛśyamātra' in Part 1 and the precise 'Translation and Annotations' in Part 2. The 108 negations in the introductory part utilize a rhetorical wordplay (śleṣa) as a core mechanism to dismantle the fictitious nature of the combination of names, phrases, and letters, leading the practitioner to the realization of svacittadṛśyamātra. In this process, it presents the inevitable path of how analytical “removal” (除遣, vibhāvanā) Schmithausen (1982, pp. 59-85) defines the term "removal"—corresponding to vibhāvanā (除遣)—as the systematic nullification of objects projected by false discrimination. While vibhāvanā carries the etymological duality of "observation" and "destruction," its function in the Śrāvakabhūmi and the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra (XIX. 50) emphasizes this destructive aspect over later meditative interpretations of emptiness. Within the LankāvatāraSūtra, it serves as a rigorous deconstruction to strip away external projections and manifest the mind's inherent purity.
leads to the achievement of “the domain of inner realization by holy wisdom” (āryajñānapratyātmagatigocara). This philological rigor and establishment of a methodological framework represent a hermeneutic leap that restores the LAS study into modern language and integrates fragmented Buddhist doctrine into a cohesive system of praxis.
