This dissertation aims to examine the textual characteristics and doctrinal structure of the Daejongji Hyeonmunbonlon[大宗地玄 文本論] and to demonstrate the possibility that this treatise was compiled in eighth-century Silla. Traditionally, the Daejongji Hyeonmunbonlon has been regarded as a work composed by
Aśvaghoṣa[馬鳴] and translated by Paramārtha[眞諦]. In recent scholarship, however, it has increasingly been suggested that the text was pseudepigraphically attributed to these figures and may instead have originated in Silla. Despite this possibility, previous studies have focused primarily on its relationship with the Seukmahayeonlon[釋摩訶衍論], while comprehensive research on the origin and doctrinal characteristics, of the Daejongji Hyeonmunbonlon itself has remained insufficient.
Accordingly, this study undertakes a comparative investigation from both philological and intellectual-historical perspectives in order to examine the transmission, historical background, and doctrinal characteristics of the Daejongji Hyeonmunbonlon. First, it analyzes Chinese and Japanese bibliographical records, together with the transmission history of the Buddhist canon, to clarify the textual transmission of the work. It also critically reexamines previous theories concerning its authorship and date of compilation, thereby reassessing the conventional attribution to Aśvaghoṣa as author and Paramārtha as translator.
The study further investigates the text’s literary style, citation patterns, and linguistic characteristics, while examining its relationship with major Awakening of Faith commentarial works, including the Daeseung Gisinlon So[大乘起信論疏], the Neungeommyoji[楞嚴妙指], and the Daejongji Hyeonmunbonlon yakju[大宗地玄文本論略註]. In addition, it compares the Daejongji Hyeonmunbonlon with several Buddhist texts associated with Silla, including the Seukmahayeonlon, the Geumgang Sammaegyeong[金剛三昧經], the Geumgang Sammaegyeonglon[金剛三昧經論], the Haeinsammaelon[海印三昧論], the Hwaeom Ilseung Beopgyedo[華嚴一乘法界圖], and the Geonnaphoha Ilseung Suhaenja Bimiluigi[健拏標訶一乘修行者秘密義記]. As a result, the Daejongji Hyeonmunbonlon is shown to share close similarities with the Seukmahayeonlon in terms of citations, terminology, literary style, and doctrinal structure. At the same time, however, it develops an independent doctrinal system centered on the Huayan ideal of perfect interpenetration and a distinctive scheme of bodhisattva practice. Furthermore, comparison with other Silla Buddhist texts reveals similar doctrinal foundations and patterns of intellectual development.
On this basis, the Daejongji Hyeonmunbonlon may be understood as a treatise that systematically integrates and reconstructs Yogācāra thought, the Awakening of Faith tradition, and Huayan philosophy as they developed within Silla Buddhism. In particular, its system of practice based on the Five Vajra Stages[Geumgang Owi, 金剛五位] and the Fifty-one Stages[五十一位] of Bodhisattva Practice combines doctrinal theory with practical cultivation, presenting a systematic model of Buddhist practice in Silla. This demonstrates that the Daejongji Hyeonmunbonlon is not merely a theoretical treatise but a practical text intended to unite religious cultivation with the guidance of practitioners.
Finally, this study also considers the contemporary significance of the Daejongji Hyeonmunbonlon by examining the practical implications of its theory of practice from a modern perspective. It argues that Buddhist cultivation, as presented in the Daejongji Hyeonmunbonlon, is not an abstract or detached theory but a practical system applicable to everyday life. Therefore, the Daejongji Hyeonmunbonlon should be recognized as an important Buddhist text that exemplifies the originality and synthetic character of Silla Buddhist thought, and its historical formation and intellectual significance deserve to be reexamined within the broader context of East Asian Buddhist history.
