The purpose of this study was to explore changes in infant teachers’ perceptions and the narrative meanings emerging from their practice of ‘Reading Infants’ Learning’—a process of capturing the educational meanings embedded in infants’ play and everyday experiences—following the implementation of the 2024 Revised Standard Childcare Curriculum. Recent childcare policies have redefined infants as active agents of learning and have emphasized teachers’ roles as interpreters and co-constructors. However, in childcare settings, confusion persists because of the gap between the abstract language of policy and educational practice. Therefore, this study examined how teachers construct meanings from their experiences of reading infants’ learning within the contexts of time, social interaction, and place. For this purpose, a narrative inquiry approach was employed. Three infant teachers with more than five years of teaching experience who had completed training on the 2024 Revised Standard Childcare Curriculum were selected as research participants. Based on Seidman’s (2013) methodology, data collection began with the first and second phases of individual in-depth interviews. Subsequently, to share individual teachers' internal reflections through interaction with peers and thus expand them into a community narrative, the third phase was conducted as a focus group discussion (FGD), alongside multi-angled data collection utilizing field notes. The collected field texts were analyzed and reconstructed as research texts within the three-dimensional inquiry space of temporality, sociality, and place proposed by Clandinin and Connelly (2000). The findings of this study are as follows: First, the participating teachers experienced an overall transformation in their perceptions of infants, moving beyond viewing them merely as recipients of care and protection. They abandoned the conventional practice of evaluating infants according to fragmented developmental milestones by age, and became more attentive to vibrant moments of learning revealed through infants’ subtle gestures, gazes, babbling, and repetitive everyday behaviors. Consequently, they reconceptualized infants as competent learners and independent subjects who continuously generate differences through their relationships with the environment. Second, the teachers experienced a narrative transformation of their professional roles within childcare practice. They flexibly provided open-ended materials and learning environments that immediately reflected infants’ interests and needs. Through these practices, they acknowledged that learning is not an achievement confined within an individual infant but a generative process dynamically entangled with objects, media, and spaces, thus evolving into professional facilitators and interpreters who support the flow of play. Third, the teachers redefined observation and documentation as reflective and cyclical practices. By retrospectively reviewing infants’ play experiences, they rediscovered the hidden intentions and experiential meanings that had not been recognized at the time of interaction. Documentation thus became an active and cyclical process of reflection rather than a mere recording activity. Despite practical dilemmas arising from heavy workloads and caregiving responsibilities, they established themselves as reflective practitioners by bridging interpretive gaps through communication and collaboration with colleagues. Based on these findings, this study suggests that, for the successful implementation of the revised curriculum in infant childcare settings, it is necessary to institutionalize opportunities for teachers to share observations and documentation informally, expand practice-oriented advanced training programs that enhance teachers’ interpretive and reflective competencies, and provide policy support for reducing administrative burdens and improving childcare environments. Furthermore, amidst the monumental changes of the integration of early childhood education and care (ECEC), future qualitative studies should continue to investigate how infant teachers working in diverse childcare settings, including public, private, and family childcare centers, transform their perceptions of infants’ learning within their respective lives.
