This study aims to elucidate the unique literary achievements of Park Wan-suh’s novels during the 1970s and 1980s—under the dynamic historical conditions of South Korea’s compressed modernization and the restructuring of its literary field—from an integrated perspective of the realization of "social imagination" and the acquisition of "popularity." To this end, this paper cross-analyzes the narrative mechanisms operating within nine major novels serialized in daily newspapers and women’s magazines, which wielded massive popular influence at the time: The Naked Tree, A Year of Famine in the City, A Tottering Afternoon, The Beginning of Days Lived, Pride and Delusion, That Winter Was Warm, A Standing Woman, People of Seoul, and Are You Still Dreaming?
First, this study examines how the "social imagination," which forms the backbone of Park’s novels, operates as a narrative epistemology that incarnates macroscopic historical contradictions into the fierce lifeworld of the middle class. Instead of relying on abstract grand narratives, the author intricately weaves acute contemporary social issues into the conflict structures among characters. These issues include the hypocrisy of patriarchy and intellectual authority, the exclusive survival ethics forged by the scars of the Korean War, the desire for class reproduction aimed at educational capital, and the violence of spatial power driven by speculative capitalism and the urban development of 'Gangnam'.
Second, this paper analyzes the essence and narrative driving forces of the overwhelming "popularity" achieved by Park’s novels. To convey her sociological critical consciousness to the public, the author appropriated the characteristics of serialized media and "melodramatic techniques" as primary narrative devices. Genre conventions—such as the deceptive materialism of the nouveau riche, passion and infidelity, clashes of gender norms, and extreme conflict and collapse—induced the "punitive curiosity" and emotional immersion of contemporary middle-class readers, functioning as core mechanisms that drove the explosive popularity of her works.
Third, this study argues that the most crucial aesthetic achievement of Park’s literature lies in the "technical implosion" that subverts such popular enthusiasm and conventional fantasies from within the text. By intervening with critical messages at the narrative climax where conventional catharsis is typically expected, the author drives the characters' blind desires for upward mobility into existential catastrophes. Through this narrative strategy of betraying fantasies, readers who had been consuming the texts as mere entertainment from a safe distance are transformed into subjects of ethical self-reflection, recognizing themselves as hypocritical bystanders and accomplices to the contradictions of their time.
In conclusion, Park Wan-suh’s novels of the 1970s and 1980s represent a narrative praxis that successfully integrates a sharp awareness of the times ("social imagination") with reader-captivating appeal ("popularity"). This disrupts the dichotomous boundary between pure literature and popular fiction, utilizing the grammar of popular conventions to indict the fetishistic trends of contemporary capitalist society. Although her works exhibit certain epistemological limitations, such as an overreliance on dramatic coincidences or a convergence toward petit-bourgeois ethics, these also hold academic value as symptomatic products that multidimensionally reveal the internal contradictions of a middle class experiencing an upheaval of values. The significance of this study lies in its elucidation of the interactive principles between the dual mechanisms of popularity and literariness, thereby shedding new light on the reality of the 'non-elite narrative public sphere' constructed by Park Wan-suh and re-evaluating her status in literary history.
