This study investigates the structure of rosary practice and its significance within Buddhist practice theory as presented in the Fo Shuo Jiaoliang Shuzhu Gongde Jing (佛說校量數珠功德經, hereafter Jiaoliang Shuzhu Jing). While previous scholarship has primarily focused on the historical origin of the Buddhist rosary, its material characteristics, ritual usage, or symbolic meaning, relatively little attention has been paid to the internal structure of practice presented in the scripture itself. This study therefore examines the Jiaoliang Shuzhu Jing as a systematic practice text and reconstructs its internal logic through philological, doctrinal, and practice-theoretical analysis.
The research is based on the Chinese translation by Baosiwei (寶思惟) and is supplemented by comparison with Yijing's (義淨) Manshushili Zhouzang Zhong Jiaoliang Shuzhu Gongde Jing (曼殊室利呪藏中校量數珠功德經). In addition, the Fo Shuo Muhuanzi Jing (佛說木槵子經), the Jingangding Yuqie Nianzhu Jing (金剛頂瑜伽念珠經), and the Apitan Ganluwei Lun (阿毘曇甘露味論) are comparatively examined in order to clarify the historical development of rosary practice and the doctrinal background of the 108-bead norm.
The principal findings are as follows.
First, the Jiaoliang Shuzhu Jing should be understood not merely as a scripture explaining the merits of rosary materials but as a systematic practice text that organizes repetitive Buddhist cultivation. The scripture integrates upholding the rosary (shouchi, 受持), recitation (niansong, 念誦), and tactile manipulation of the rosary into a unified structure of practice through which body, speech, and mind are progressively organized.
Second, this study proposes "bead-counting practice" as an analytical concept derived from a philological analysis of the scripture. Rather than representing a canonical technical term, this concept explains the integrated practice expressed through songqia (誦掐), qianian (掐念), shouchi (手持), and shusong (數誦), highlighting the tactile dimension through which repetitive cultivation is organized, sustained, and embodied.
Third, the study reinterprets the doctrinal meaning of the 108-bead rosary. The Jiaoliang Shuzhu Jing presents 108 beads as the normative structure of practice without explicitly explaining its doctrinal foundation. Through comparison with the Fo Shuo Muhuanzi Jing and the Apitan Ganluwei Lun, this thesis argues that the number 108 functions primarily as a practical framework organizing repetitive cultivation, while its scholastic foundation is supplied by the Abhidharma tradition. Thus, the Jiaoliang Shuzhu Jing presents the practice norm, whereas the Apitan Ganluwei Lun provides the doctrinal rationale underlying that norm.
Fourth, a comparative analysis of the *Fo Shuo Muhuanzi Jing*, the Jiaoliang Shuzhu Jing, and the Jingangding Yuqie Nianzhu Jing demonstrates a coherent historical development of Buddhist rosary practice: from the archetypal model of repetitive recitation, to the systematization of practice, and finally to its expansion within Esoteric Buddhist ritual and contemplative traditions. Within this development, the Jiaoliang Shuzhu Jing occupies the pivotal position linking the formative stage of rosary practice with its later Esoteric Buddhist elaboration.
Fifth, this study reinterprets the doctrine of merit (gongde) from the perspective of Buddhist practice theory. Merit is understood not as an external religious reward bestowed after practice but as the internal principle that sustains repetitive cultivation. It emerges through the gradual integration of body, speech, and mind within repetitive practice and therefore represents the qualitative maturation of practice itself rather than the mechanical accumulation of religious benefits.
The principal academic contribution of this thesis lies in proposing "bead-counting practice" as a practice-theoretical analytical concept derived from the Jiaoliang Shuzhu Jing. Through this concept, the thesis integrates the structure of practice, the doctrinal foundation of the 108-bead norm, the historical development of rosary practice, and the practice-theoretical meaning of merit into a single interpretive framework. Consequently, the Jiaoliang Shuzhu Jing is reinterpreted not as a scripture concerned primarily with religious merit, but as a systematic practice text that organizes repetitive cultivation.
Ultimately, this study argues that the Jiaoliang Shuzhu Jing presents a coherent system in which repetitive practice is organized through a structured interaction of body, speech, and mind, while merit functions as the internal principle through which repetitive cultivation is sustained. By reconstructing this system through philological analysis, doctrinal interpretation, historical comparison, and practice-theoretical synthesis, the thesis offers a new understanding of Buddhist rosary practice and provides an interpretive framework that connects Buddhist practice theory with the study of Buddhist material culture. The resulting argument proceeds through a coherent sequence—practice structure, doctrinal foundation, historical development, practice-theoretical integration, and overall synthesis—giving the study both conceptual unity and broader relevance for future research in Buddhist practice theory.
