Structural damage in concrete members subjected to compressive loading can lead to progressive cracking and sudden failure if not detected early. Acoustic Emission (AE) is an effective non-destructive monitoring technique that detects internal damage in real time by analyzing stress-wave signals generated during crack initiation and propagation. This study investigates AE-based damage stage identification and source localization in concrete blocks subjected to repeated and monotonic compressive loading. A total of seven concrete block specimens were tested under compression, including both unconfined and CFRP-confined specimens. Among them, two specimens were subjected to repeated loading, while five specimens were tested under monotonic loading. Six AE sensors were installed on the concrete block surfaces to monitor damage activity during loading continuously. AE parameters, including amplitude, counts, energy, signal strength, and peak frequency, were analyzed to evaluate damage progression and crack behavior. In addition, AE source localization was performed to identify the spatial distribution of damage during different loading stages. To enhance damage characterization, a machine-learning-based framework was developed using AE features obtained from Hsu–Nielsen (HN) tests and experimental loading data. Ensemble learning models were employed for damage-stage classification and source localization. The developed framework achieved damage-stage classification accuracies of 80.67% and 71.67% for the control and CFRP-confined specimens, respectively, while source localization accuracies of 78.91% and 69.59% were obtained. The machine-learning-based localization results showed better agreement with observed crack patterns compared to the conventional Time-of-Arrival (TOA) approach. The results showed that AE activity increased significantly with crack initiation and propagation. Under repeated loading, damage accumulation progressed gradually through different loading stages, while monotonic loading produced continuous crack development until failure. CFRP-confined specimens exhibited delayed crack propagation and more distributed damage activity compared to unconfined specimens. Furthermore, localized AE events showed good agreement with the observed crack patterns and failure regions of the specimens. The study demonstrates that AE monitoring combined with machine learning can effectively identify damage evolution, crack progression, damage severity, and source localization in concrete structures under compressive loading. The findings highlight the potential of integrating AE-based monitoring and data-driven approaches for advanced structural health monitoring applications.
