The purpose of this study was to compare the acute effects of the FIFA 11+ and High-Intensity Warm-Up (HIWU) programs on Achilles tendon stiffness and functional performance in adolescent soccer players, thereby providing scientific evidence for the selection of warm-up programs in practical settings.
The participants were 18 male adolescent soccer players aged 13~15 years who had at least two years of playing experience, had participated regularly in soccer training during the previous six months, and had no musculoskeletal injuries within the previous three months. A randomized crossover design was employed, in which all participants performed both the FIFA 11+ and HIWU programs in a randomized order. A two-week washout period was provided between the two conditions. Achilles tendon stiffness, One Leg Juggling (OLJ), Zigzag Dribble (ZD), Countermovement Jump (CMJ), and Repeated Sprint Ability (RSA) were measured before and after each warm-up intervention. Data were analyzed using a two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA).
The main findings were as follows. First, Achilles tendon stiffness increased after both warm-up programs, with a greater increase observed following HIWU than FIFA 11+. Second, no significant main effects of time or condition, nor any interaction effects, were found for OLJ or ZD. Third, CMJ performance showed greater improvement following HIWU than following FIFA 11+. Fourth, the best, average, and total RSA times improved after both warm-up programs, whereas no significant difference was observed between the two conditions. In addition, no significant changes were found in the fatigue index (FI) under either condition.
The results of this study indicate that HIWU elicited greater acute improvements in Achilles tendon stiffness and jumping performance than FIFA 11+. In contrast, FIFA 11+, as an injury prevention-oriented warm-up program, may contribute to stable neuromuscular activation and improved functional readiness. Therefore, it is suggested that the selection of warm-up programs in practical settings should be based on the specific objectives of the warm-up and the demands of the competitive situation.
