Natural monument animals are natural heritage vulnerable to damage and loss, and there is a growing need to digitize them so that their morphological information can be precisely recorded and made accessible to the public. However, animal specimens differ greatly in their surface optical and geometric properties depending on the type of integument—such as hair, feathers, or chitinous exoskeleton—making it difficult to apply a single 3D acquisition technique uniformly. Because feature extraction, light reflection characteristics, and capture strategies are required differently for each integument type, it is necessary to systematically examine which technique is more suitable according to the intended use, whether documentation, research, or service. Against this background, this study classifies natural monument animals by integument type, compares the suitability of photogrammetry and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) for each type, and connects the findings to the design of an actual web-based service.
Four species representing distinct integument types were selected: the Jindo dog (Canis lupus familiaris; mammalian, hair-covered type), the oriental stork (Ciconia boyciana Swinhoe) and the Tristram's woodpecker (Dryocopus javensis Tristram) (avian, feather-covered type), and the longhorn beetle (Callipogon relictus Semenov-Tian-Shansky; insect, chitinous exoskeleton type). To ensure fairness in comparison, the outputs of both techniques were generated from the same photographic data by sharing camera pose estimation, and they were compared along three axes—geometric fidelity, surface texture reproduction, and service suitability—using data from a structured-light scanner (ArtecLeo) as the ground truth.
The analysis showed that in geometric fidelity, photogrammetry consistently reproduced forms closer to the ground truth across all types. In surface texture reproduction, the strengths diverged by integument type: 3DGS rendered the organic texture of hair and feathers more naturally, whereas photogrammetry was more suitable for the chitinous exoskeleton. In service suitability, 3DGS held an advantage across all types in terms of file size and loading time. Meanwhile, the longhorn beetle failed in structured-light data acquisition due to the light reflection of its chitinous exoskeleton, revealing the methodological challenge of securing a precise geometric ground truth for highly glossy surfaces. These results indicate that the issue is not which technique is absolutely superior, but rather that different techniques are optimized for different purposes—research and documentation, where geometric accuracy is required, and service and education, where web-based accessibility and visual completeness of texture are important.
This study synthesized the comparative results into a type-specific technical suitability matrix and connected it to three design principles: dual construction of outputs, purpose-based allocation of techniques, and comparative visualization. Based on these principles, a web-based 3D natural monument encyclopedia prototype was implemented, which provides the photogrammetry and 3DGS outputs of the same specimen side by side and allows comparison from a synchronized viewpoint, equipped with core functions such as an interactive 3D viewer, camera viewpoint synchronization, a dynamic scale bar, and a metadata panel including acquisition and processing history.
This study holds significance in that it systematizes a methodology for constructing type-specific 3D data of natural monument animals on the basis of a biological classification system, and presents techniques optimized for each intended use through a comparison based on identical input data. Furthermore, by connecting the results of technical comparison to the design of a functioning web service, it explores the interface between natural heritage digitization research and public-facing services.
