This study aims to analyze the aesthetic characteristics of performance and the processes of creation and direction in the Seodo-sori plays The Song of Yi Sun-sin, Yi Sun-sin’s Mother, and The Tears of Yi Sun-sin, all of which were created based on the narrative of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. Focusing on these three works, for which the researcher personally wrote the scripts and directed the productions, this study examines how the historical narrative of Yi Sun-sin was reconstructed through the traditional form of Seodo-sori theater and expanded into a contemporary performing art. In particular, the study explores the possibilities of a performing art form that integrates history and traditional music, drawing upon the spirit and symbolism of Yi Sun-sin as shaped by the historical context of the Imjin War (1592–1598).

To achieve this objective, the study first examines the concept, types, and historical development of Seodo-sori theater and analyzes the concept and musical characteristics of Seodo-sori, which serves as the foundation of the Yi Sun-sin Seodo-sori plays. From the perspective of performance aesthetics, the study investigates the interactions among script, actors, music, stage direction, lighting, sound, costumes, and props. It also analyzes the artistic value of the performances by focusing on actor–audience interaction and the visual and auditory effects generated during actual performances. Furthermore, the historical authenticity of the works and the background of their narrative formation are examined through literary sources such as The Complete Works of Admiral Yi Chungmugong (Yi Sun-sin), Jingbirok (The Book of Corrections), and Haengnok (Records of Conduct).

This dissertation consists of five chapters. Chapter I presents the background and purpose of the study, reviews previous research, and outlines the scope and methodology of the study. In particular, it highlights the necessity and significance of research on Seodo-sori theater, considering the relative lack of previous studies in this field. Chapter II examines the concepts and historical development of sori-geuk (musical storytelling theater) and Seodo-sori and summarizes the theoretical background of performance aesthetics, focusing on stage direction and the interaction between sound and lighting. It also analyzes historical documents that provide the foundation for the Yi Sun-sin Seodo-sori plays in order to evaluate their historical authenticity.

Chapter III provides a detailed analysis of the narrative structures, musical elements, stage direction, and actor–audience interactions in the three performed works from the perspective of performance aesthetics. The findings reveal that the distinctive emotional qualities and dramatic expressions of Seodo-sori effectively convey both the historical circumstances of the Imjin War and the spirit of Yi Sun-sin. Moreover, visual and auditory stage elements, including lighting, sound, costumes, and props, play a crucial role in recreating historical events vividly and enhancing audience immersion and emotional engagement. Chapter IV examines the significance and aesthetic value of Yi Sun-sin Seodo-sori plays within contemporary performing arts and explores their potential as both historical education content and traditional cultural content. Finally, Chapter V summarizes the findings of the study and discusses its significance, limitations, and future research directions.
The results of this study indicate that Yi Sun-sin Seodo-sori plays represent a form of performing art that combines historical facts with traditional vocal music and theatrical elements, thereby providing audiences with both historical empathy and aesthetic experiences. Unlike conventional history education that relies primarily on written records, historical Seodo-sori plays allow audiences to directly see, hear, and experience historical events through live performances, resulting in significant educational and cultural effects. The historical messages conveyed through the performances enhance audience interest in history and traditional culture while naturally communicating communal values and lessons.

In addition, this study demonstrates that traditional arts can generate new artistic value through contemporary reinterpretation and creative adaptation beyond the simple preservation and transmission of cultural heritage. While traditional arts have often been discussed primarily from the perspective of preservation, the Yi Sun-sin Seodo-sori plays examined in this study are significant in that they attempt a new performance format by combining historical narratives with traditional music. This serves as an example of how traditional arts can continue to expand and evolve in response to changing times.

However, challenges remain, including limited public interest in traditional music and historical content, insufficient policy support, and inadequate foundations for creative production. In particular, the field of Seodo-sori theater has yet to accumulate sufficient research and performance cases. Therefore, further studies on performance aesthetics, creative methodologies, and educational applications are needed. Moreover, support policies at both national and local government levels, professional workforce development, and the creation of new performance content should be promoted simultaneously.

In conclusion, traditional arts are valuable cultural heritage that embody the history and lived experiences of a people. They should continue to develop through reinterpretation and creative expansion in accordance with social and cultural changes. As a creative example that integrates history, traditional music, and performing arts, the Yi Sun-sin Seodo-sori plays demonstrate the contemporary potential of traditional arts and suggest a new direction for historical Seodo-sori theater. It is hoped that a wider variety of creative performances combining historical figures and traditional music will continue to emerge, thereby expanding both the popular appeal and artistic value of traditional arts.
