This study examined the mediating role of anger expression styles and the moderating role of ego-resilience in the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and depression in early adulthood. A total of 200 adults completed an online self-report survey. Maladaptive perfectionism significantly predicted depression. Among the three dimensions of anger expression styles, anger-in and anger-out mediated this relationship, whereas the mediating effect of anger-control was relatively limited, suggesting differential roles of anger expression styles in the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and depression. Ego-resilience moderated the relationships between maladaptive perfectionism and anger-in and anger-out, such that these associations weakened as ego-resilience increased. Furthermore, the indirect effects of maladaptive perfectionism on depression through anger-in and anger-out were stronger at lower levels of ego-resilience. These findings suggest that ego-resilience functions as a protective factor that buffers the negative effects of maladaptive perfectionism.
