This study aims to compare and analyze three piano concertos composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) during his late Viennese period: the Piano Concerto in D minor, K.466 (1785), the Piano Concerto in C major, K.467 (1785), and the Piano Concerto in A major, K.488 (1786). Rather than limiting itself to the analysis of individual works, this study compares the three works simultaneously in order to examine both the traditional compositional language of Mozart’s late piano concertos and the individuality of each work.
This study is organized around five research questions. First, it examines the position occupied by Mozart’s piano concertos and their stylistic development within the formation and evolution of the concerto in the Classical period. Second, it analyzes the musical characteristics of K.466, K.467, and K.488 in terms of formal structure, thematic development, the treatment of the development section, the construction of the recapitulation, and the function of the cadenza. Third, it investigates the common features shown by the first movements of the three works within concerto-sonata form. Fourth, it compares the differences among the three works in formal structure, thematic development, development-section treatment, and the function of the cadenza. Fifth, through this analysis and comparison, it comprehensively summarizes the characteristics of these three late piano concertos by Mozart.
This study was conducted by combining literature review, musical analysis, comparative analysis, and historical examination. In order to ensure analytical consistency and clarity of comparison, the first movements of the three works were selected as the main objects of analysis. Each first movement was divided into the first exposition, second exposition, development, recapitulation, cadenza, and coda, and the results were organized according to four comparative aspects: structure and sonata form, cadenza, instrumentation, and musical elements.
The comparative analysis reveals the following common features among the three works. First, all three employ concerto-sonata form and present a double-exposition structure, in which the orchestra and the solo piano each introduce thematic material. Second, a clear contrast is established between the first and second themes. Third, the development sections actively employ motivic development, tonal change, and musical interaction between the orchestra and the piano. Fourth, a cadenza is placed after the recapitulation, allowing the soloist to display freedom of performance and technical ability. Fifth, the cadenza is not merely a space for technical display, but functions as a means of structural integration based on the themes of the work.
However, within the same formal framework, the three works reveal distinct individual characteristics. K.466, based on the dark and tense tonality of D minor, creates a strong sense of tension. It is characterized by the contrast between the solo piano and the orchestra when the piano enters at measure 77, as well as by the tragic character that is further emphasized when the second theme returns in the recapitulation in the tonic key of D minor. The treatment of the development section may be summarized as an “accumulation of conflict.” K.467, based on a march-like theme in C major, pursues grandeur and structural balance. In the development section, a tonal progression begins in E minor and proceeds through A–D–G–C. The subsequent return of thematic motives in the recapitulation creates structural equilibrium. K.488 possesses a warm and lyrical character in A major and features a complete and symmetrical exposition structure. In the development section, material C is developed, with the tonality moving from E minor to C major and then from A minor to F major. The recapitulation then returns to the tonic key of A major.
The academic significance of this study may be summarized as follows. First, by examining K.466, K.467, and K.488 according to the same analytical criteria, this study systematically clarifies the similarities and differences among the works, which have not been sufficiently illuminated in previous studies focused on individual pieces. Second, by establishing four criteria—structure and sonata form, cadenza, instrumentation, and musical elements—it secures objectivity and systematicity in the comparative study. Third, by connecting the results of formal analysis with musical interpretation, it provides an academic foundation for applying analytical research to actual performance interpretation. Fourth, by presenting the research results comprehensively through comparative analytical tables, it offers useful reference material for future studies.
Although Mozart employs the same concerto-sonata form, he flexibly and diversely varies the formal process according to the tonality, compositional method, and musical expressive techniques of each work. This demonstrates that his compositional aesthetics lie not in the repetition of conventional forms, but in original transformation. The comparative analysis in this study is significant in that it confirms K.466, K.467, and K.488 as representative examples that simultaneously reveal the diversity and unity of Mozart’s late piano concertos.
