Purpose. Optical see-through augmented reality (OST-AR) smart glasses form their virtual image at a fixed far focal distance, even as the physical scene behind it varies in depth. Because the same neural command can drive the accommodative and pupillary components of the near reflex to different degrees, one component may track the far virtual image more faithfully than the other. The present study measured accommodation and the pupil while a far-focused binocular AR virtual image was viewed against a near and a far physical background, alongside matched AR-free baselines.
Methods. Fourteen healthy young adults took part (mean age 24.9 ± 3.2 years; binocular spherical equivalent refraction −1.31 to +0.50 D). Each completed four conditions in a fixed order. The two AR-free baselines came first: a far physical target at 5 m (FN) and a near physical target at 40 cm (NN). The two AR conditions followed: the far-focused virtual image on a far physical background at 5 m (FA), then on a near physical background at 40 cm (NA). The virtual image was a single planar target presented binocularly at a far focal distance, so its vergence demand stayed constant. Refraction and pupil diameter of the right eye were recorded at 5 Hz with an open-field infrared autorefractor (WAM-5500) for 12 to 15 s per condition. After velocity-based artifact rejection and PCHIP interpolation, the mean response over a 0 to 13 s window was taken for each participant and condition. Paired comparisons used Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Equivalence of NA and FA was assessed with two one-sided tests (TOST), using bounds of ±0.25 D for refraction and ±0.10 mm for pupil diameter.
Results. Accommodation complied predominantly with the far virtual image, leaving a small residual near response: NA − FA = −0.19 D (p = .025), about 16% of the AR-free near reflex and not equivalent within ±0.25 D. The pupil did not follow. Its near response held: NA − FA = −0.34 mm (p = .042), 77.6% of the AR-free near reflex, with no detectable attenuation (p = .583). Variability between participants ran high; the group split, even so, was clean: accommodation largely reduced under AR, the pupil not.
Conclusion. When a far-focused AR virtual image is overlaid on a near physical background, accommodation predominantly, but not fully, complies with the far virtual demand, whereas the pupillary component retains a substantial proportion of its baseline near response. The two components of the near reflex therefore exhibit a component-specific gradient: each responds to the residual proximal cues of the physical scene, but to differing degrees, rather than tracking the virtual image as a single synergistic unit.
