The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of multidimensional perfectionism on parenting stress among mothers raising their first child during infancy, and to investigate the moderating effects of perceived spousal support in this relationship.
The participants consisted of 300 mothers across Korea who were raising their first child aged 36 months or younger. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS 22.0. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted. To examine the moderating effects more precisely, independent and moderating variables were mean-centered, and interaction terms were created and included in the analysis. Additionally, simple slope analysis was conducted to explore the patterns of interaction effects.
The main findings of this study are as follows. First, among the subcomponents of multidimensional perfectionism, socially prescribed perfectionism had a significant positive effect on parenting stress. In contrast, self-oriented and other-oriented perfectionism did not show significant effects on parenting stress. This suggests that mothers who are more sensitive to others’ expectations and evaluations tend to experience higher levels of parenting stress than those driven by internal standards.
Second, none of the subcomponents of spousal support—emotional support, esteem support, and instrumental support—had a significant direct effect on parenting stress. This indicates that spousal support may function more as a moderating variable rather than exerting a direct influence, with its effects depending on the mother's psychological characteristics.
Third, differential moderating effects of spousal support were found in the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and parenting stress. Specifically, esteem support showed a buffering effect, reducing the negative impact of socially prescribed perfectionism on parenting stress. In contrast, emotional and instrumental support did not function as buffering factors; rather, they showed different patterns of interaction in this relationship. These findings suggest that the function of spousal support may vary depending on its type, and that not all forms of support operate in the same manner.
Overall, the results indicate that parenting stress among mothers is a complex phenomenon shaped by the interaction between individual personality traits and environmental factors. In particular, for mothers with high levels of socially prescribed perfectionism, recognition and respect from their spouses may serve as an important protective factor that alleviates psychological burden, while the effects of support may differ depending on how it is provided.
This study confirmed the interaction effects of multidimensional perfectionism and spousal support on parenting stress and discussed the qualitative importance of spousal support, as well as implications for parent education and counseling interventions aimed at reducing parenting stress. Suggestions for future research were also provided.
