The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of highly educated mothers who experienced traumatic distress following job loss due to child-rearing responsibilities and to develop a substantive theory explaining their psychological adaptation process. To achieve this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 highly educated stay-at-home mothers in their 30s and 40s who had returned to work after childbirth but were compelled to resign due to child-rearing responsibilities, scored 15 or higher on the Korean version of the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (K-PDS) when recalling their job-loss experiences related to child-rearing, and had not returned to employment at the time of the study. Data were analyzed using the grounded theory approach proposed by Strauss and Corbin(1990, 1998).
The analysis yielded 103 concepts, 38 subcategories, and 16 categories through open coding. The paradigm analysis revealed that the causal condition in the psychological adaptation process of highly educated mothers who experienced traumatic distress following job loss due to child-rearing was ‘experiencing involuntary job loss’, while the central phenomenon was identified as ‘the pervasive suffering of losing the self that was once professionally competent and proud’. The contextual conditions influencing the central phenomenon included ‘personal experiences’, ‘family circumstances’, ‘sociocultural pressures’, and ‘environmental situations’. The intervening conditions that facilitated or constrained action/interaction strategies were ‘individual disposition factors’, ‘family factors’, ‘interpersonal factors’, and ‘environmental factors’. The action/interaction strategies consisted of ‘personal efforts’, ‘relational efforts’, and ‘avoidant/isolative coping’. The consequences were identified as ‘recovery while carrying diluted pain’, ‘exhaustion and disconnection’, and ‘insight and growth emerging through suffering’.
The psychological adaptation process of highly educated mothers who experienced traumatic distress following job loss due to child-rearing was found to progress through the following stages: ‘voluntarily accepting forced job loss’, ‘the total collapse of life resulting from the loss of professional identity’, ‘realizing that life could not continue in this way and beginning the struggle for recovery’, ‘struggling desperately(coping alone and coping together)’, ‘multidimensional efforts and sustained collaborative coping’ (‘limited efforts and isolated coping’), and finally ‘recovery while carrying diluted pain’ (‘exhaustion and disconnection’).
The core category of the adaptation process was identified as ‘a desperate and holistic struggle to restore and reconstruct one’s professional self amid the pervasive suffering of losing the self that was once professionally competent and proud’. Based on the core category, four adaptation types were identified: the ‘active growth type based on comprehensive support’, the ‘active recovery type based on social support’, the ‘passive exhaustion type with limited family support’, and the ‘passive exhaustion-fixation type characterized by a lack of support’.
Based on these findings, the implications and limitations of the study were discussed, and directions for future research were suggested. This study is significant in that it provides an integrated understanding of the experiences of highly educated mothers who experienced traumatic distress following job loss due to child-rearing and the conditions influencing their adaptation process, while offering specific counseling psychological intervention strategies and policy recommendations.
