Eearly Childhood Teachers’ Experiences and Support Needs Regarding the Use of Digital Media in Basic Life Habits Education for Young Children
This study aims to explore in depth early childhood teachers’ perceptions of basic life habits education for young children using digital media, the difficulties they experience in the process of educational implementation, and their support needs. To achieve this purpose, the following research questions were established.
1. What are early childhood teachers’ perceptions of basic life habits education using digital media?
2. What difficulties do early childhood teachers experience in the process of implementing basic life habits education using digital media?
3. What support do early childhood teachers require in relation to basic life habits education using digital media?
This study was conducted with 10 early childhood teachers of classes for children aged 3 to 5 working at kindergartens and childcare centers in the Seoul metropolitan area. The participants were selected based on their experience as homeroom teachers of classes for children aged 3 to 5 and their experience in teaching basic life habits using digital media. Data were collected from January 14 to March 30, 2026, through semi-structured one-on-one in-depth interviews and participant journals. The collected data were analyzed through repeated reading, comparison, and categorization.
The findings of this study are as follows. First, early childhood teachers perceived digital media as a tool that can support young children’s understanding, interest, and participation by concretizing the procedures and concepts of basic life habits through videos, images, and sounds. However, they also believed that digital media cannot replace the formation of basic life habits, and that it should be connected to repeated practice in real-life contexts as well as play and daily routines. Second, teachers experienced difficulties related to children’s developmental levels and emotional responses, content selection and reconstruction, institutional device and network environments, and the risk of digital media use remaining at the level of passive viewing. Third, teachers expressed the need for age-specific and life-habit-domain-specific guidelines for digital media use, lists of verified content, case-based professional development applicable to early childhood settings, practical support for connecting digital media to play and everyday practice, and cooperative systems linking educational institutions and families.
This study confirms, through teachers’ actual experiences, that digital media can serve as a supportive medium that helps young children understand and participate in basic life habits education. At the same time, the findings show that the educational meaning of digital media use can be realized when children’s developmental characteristics, life contexts, play-centered curriculum, and repeated practical experiences are considered together. This study is significant in that it explores directions for basic life habits education using digital media in early childhood education settings and provides foundational data for establishing teacher support systems and teaching-learning strategies.
