The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of social threat appraisal in the relationship between post-event distress following a social threat event and social anxiety. Specifically, social threat appraisal was conceptualized as comprising four components: status cost appraisal, status probability appraisal, affiliation cost appraisal, and affiliation probability appraisal. The mediating effects of these appraisals were examined using a parallel multiple mediation model. A total of 348 Korean university students aged 18 to 25 who had experienced a social threat event completed the following questionnaires: the Social Threat Event Experience Questionnaire, the Korean version of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R-K), the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS), the Social Phobia Scale (SPS), and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Social threat appraisal was measured using a scenario-based assessment depicting status- and affiliation-related threat situations, in which participants rated the anticipated level of distress (cost) and perceived likelihood of occurrence (probability).
The results indicated that post-event distress following a social threat event, social threat appraisal, and social anxiety were all significantly and positively correlated with one another. In separate simple mediation analyses, each of the four appraisals (status cost, status probability, affiliation cost, and affiliation probability) mediated the relationship between post-event distress and social anxiety. However, in the parallel multiple mediation analysis, in which all four appraisals were entered simultaneously, only status cost appraisal and status probability appraisal remained significant mediators. These findings suggest that status-related appraisals may serve as more prominent mediating factors than affiliation-related appraisals in the pathway from post-event distress to social anxiety. Finally, implications are discussed, along with limitations and suggestions for future research.
