    ABSTRACT
The Effects of Modifying Moral Attitudes Toward Obesity on Weight Bias and Body Dissatisfaction
The effects of an evaluative conditioning(EC) intervention on explicit and implicit attitudes toward obesity and body dissatisfaction were examined. A total of 123 undergraduate and graduate students participated in the study. First, participants completed self-report measures assessing body mass index (BMI) and disordered eating behaviors to examine individual physical and eating-related characteristics. Subsequently, self-report questionnaires measuring body dissatisfaction and explicit attitudes toward obesity, as well as an Implicit Association Test (IAT) assessing implicit attitudes, were administered at both pretest and posttest. Following the pretest, participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a moral association group, a general positive association group, and a control group, and completed an evaluative conditioning procedure. Body stimuli consisted of images representing obese and thin body types based on BMI criteria. After the intervention, the same self-report measures and IAT were administered to assess changes in the outcome variables. Data were analyzed using a repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), with group as a between-subjects factor and time as a within-subjects factor. The results indicated that changes in explicit attitudes toward obesity and body dissatisfaction were not statistically significant. However, for implicit attitudes, the positive association group showed a tendency toward increased negative associations with obesity from pretest to posttest. These findings suggest that evaluative conditioning may influence automatic attitudes in an unintended direction, regardless of stimulus valence. Finally, the theoretical and clinical implications, as well as limitations and directions for future research, are discussed.
