    ABSTRACT

Psychosocial Needs and Participation Constraints of Parents of Children with Developmental Disabilities

The purpose of this study was to comprehensively explore the psychosocial difficulties and emotional support experiences of parents raising children with developmental disabilities, their perceptions and expectations regarding self-help groups and family-centered psychological support programs, as well as the factors constraining program participation and the conditions facilitating participation. The study aimed to identify directions for psychological support programs that reflect the actual experiences and needs of parents of children with developmental disabilities and to provide foundational data for the development of family-centered psychological support programs.
Data were collected through an online survey conducted with 150 parents or primary caregivers who were raising children with developmental disabilities aged 3 to 12 years and currently using rehabilitation services. The survey consisted of closed-ended and open-ended questions. Descriptive statistical analyses were conducted for the closed-ended items, while responses to the open-ended questions were analyzed using the Consensual Qualitative Research-Modified (CQR-M) method.
The major findings of the study were as follows.
First, parents of children with developmental disabilities experienced complex psychosocial difficulties, including shock and guilt following their child’s diagnosis, repeated emotional exhaustion, social isolation, confusion regarding treatment and support systems, and anxiety about the future. In addition, while awareness of the need for emotional support was high, perceptions regarding the adequacy of actual support were relatively low, revealing a gap between support needs and support experiences.
Second, willingness to participate in self-help groups and family-centered psychological support programs was relatively high, and parents recognized emotional empathy and support from peer parents as key elements. In particular, sharing experiences and mutual understanding among peer parents emerged as important forms of emotional support that contributed to emotional stability and the alleviation of psychological burden. Psychological counseling for parents was also identified as a major support need.
Third, the major barriers to program participation included time constraints, caregiving burden, accessibility issues, lack of information, and financial burden. Psychological factors, such as discomfort with emotional expression and uncertainty regarding program effectiveness, were also found to influence participation. Conditions facilitating participation included childcare support, institutional accessibility, financial support, small-group formats, and online program operation.
These findings suggest that participation in psychological support programs among parents of children with developmental disabilities is influenced not only by individual willingness but also by structural and environmental conditions. Therefore, there is a need to establish consumer-centered support systems that reflect parents’ actual contexts of service use and to provide emotional support and counseling services in connection with treatment institutions.
