반려동물 사별자가 경험한 사회적 비타당화가 복합비애에 미치는 영향 : 의미형성과 침습적 반추의 이중매개효과 = The Impact of Social Invalidation on Complicated Grief among Bereaved Pet Owners: The Dual Mediating Effects of Meaning-Making and Intrusive Rumination

본 연구는 반려동물 사별자가 경험하는 사회적 비타당화가 복합비애에 미치는 영향을 검증하고, 그 과정에서 의미형성 실패와 침습적 반추의 이중매개효과를 구조방정식 모형을 통해 분석하였다. 이를 위해 반려동물과 사별한 지 6개월 이상 경과한 만 19세 이상 69세 이하의 한국 성인 353명을 대상으로 온라인 설문을 실시하였다. 사회적 비타당화는 한국판 사회적 의미 척도（SMILES）, 의미형성 실패는 스트레스경험 통합 척도-한국판（ISLES）, 침습적 반추는 한국판 사건관련 반추 척도（K-ERRI）, 복합비애는 한국어판 복합비애척도（K-ICG）를 사용하여 측정하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 25.0과 AMOS 23.0을 사용하여 분석하였으며, 매개효과 검증을 위해 팬텀변수를 설정하고 5,000회 부트스트래핑을 실시하였다.
주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사회적 비타당화, 의미형성 실패, 침습적 반추, 복합비애 간의 상관은 모두 정적이고 유의하였다. 둘째, 사회적 비타당화는 복합비애에 직접적인 정적 영향을 미쳤다. 셋째, 의미형성 실패가 사회적 비타당화와 복합비애를 단독으로 매개하는 경로는 유의하지 않았다. 넷째, 침습적 반추는 사회적 비타당화와 복합비애의 관계를 유의하게 매개하였다. 다섯째, 의미형성 실패와 침습적 반추는 사회적 비타당화와 복합비애의 관계를 순차적으로 이중매개하였다. 통제변수 중 반려동물과의 애착강도는 복합비애와 침습적 반추에 정적 영향을, 의미형성 실패에는 부적 영향을 미쳤다.
이러한 결과는 반려동물 사별자가 경험하는 사회적 비타당화가 의미형성 실패와 침습적 반추를 순차적으로 경유하여 복합비애를 심화시킬 수 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 반려동물 사별자라는 특정 집단을 대상으로 사회적 비타당화가 복합비애에 이르는 통합적인 경로를 실증적으로 검증하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 또한 상담 장면에서 반려동물 사별자의 애도 경험을 타당화하고 의미형성을 촉진하며, 침습적 반추를 조절하는 개입의 필요성을 시사한다.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the effect of social invalidation on complicated grief among bereaved pet owners, and investigated the dual mediating roles of meaning-making failure and intrusive rumination using structural equation modeling. Data were collected from 353 Korean adults aged 19 to 69 who had experienced the loss of a pet at least six months prior. Social invalidation was measured using the Korean version of the Social Meaning in Life Events Scale （SMILES）, meaning-making failure with the Korean version of the Integration of Stressful Life Experiences Scale （ISLES）, intrusive rumination with the Korean version of the Event Related Rumination Inventory （K-ERRI）, and complicated grief with the Korean version of the Inventory of Complicated Grief （K-ICG）. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 23.0, and bootstrapping with 5,000 resamples was conducted using phantom variables to test mediation effects.
The main findings were as follows. First, all correlations among social invalidation, meaning-making failure, intrusive rumination, and complicated grief were positive and statistically significant. Second, social invalidation had a significant direct effect on complicated grief. Third, the indirect path from social invalidation to complicated grief through meaning-making failure alone was not significant. Fourth, intrusive rumination significantly mediated the relationship between social invalidation and complicated grief. Fifth, meaning-making failure and intrusive rumination sequentially and jointly mediated the relationship between social invalidation and complicated grief. Among the control variables, pet attachment strength was positively associated with complicated grief and intrusive rumination, and negatively associated with meaning-making failure.
These findings suggest that social invalidation experienced by bereaved pet owners can intensify complicated grief through a sequential pathway involving meaning-making failure and intrusive rumination. This study contributes to the literature by empirically validating an integrative pathway from social invalidation to complicated grief among bereaved pet owners as a specific population. The findings also highlight the clinical importance of validating grief experiences, facilitating meaning-making, and regulating intrusive rumination in counseling practice with this population.
