This study examines how rural young adults in South Korea experience mobility and staying over the life course. Rather than treating leaving, staying, in-migration, and return as separate trajectory types or final residential outcomes, it explores how young adults come to locate themselves within changing structural conditions and social relationships. The study asks how rural young adults understand where they stand, what kinds of lives become imaginable from that position, and how such understandings are unsettled, negotiated, and redrawn over time.

The study is based on a qualitative case study of Okcheon County, a rural county in North Chungcheong Province. Okcheon is a depopulating rural area whose everyday life is closely connected to nearby urban regions such as Daejeon and Cheongju. It is also characterized by internal differences between the town center and surrounding villages, low anonymity, dense social networks, local media, cooperatives, social economy organizations, educational communities, and accumulated youth-led activities. These features make Okcheon a useful case for examining how mobility and staying are shaped not only by demographic movement but also by relationships, institutions, local activities, and everyday negotiations of place. The study draws on interviews with 20 rural young adults who had experienced diverse pathways of leaving, staying, entering, or returning to rural life. It also uses interviews with 12 supplementary participants, including local activists, residents, and public-sector actors, as well as observational materials, local media reports, and documentary sources. The data were analyzed inductively through comprehensive reading, meaning-unit analysis, pattern analysis, categorical analysis, and thematic analysis, with repeated comparison across cases and materials.

The findings show that rural young adults’ experiences of mobility and staying can be understood as a process of relational self-mapping. Relational self-mapping refers to the process through which young adults locate themselves within a social and spatial map of relationships, places, and possible futures. It captures not only where they perceive themselves to stand, but also how they come to imagine possible directions of life from that position. This map is not drawn by isolated individuals. Rather, it is continuously made, unsettled, and redrawn through family relations, peer networks, local communities, institutional arrangements, public policies, and wider social discourses. In this sense, relational self-mapping involves both how young adults are positioned by others and how they search for possible ways of living from within, against, or beyond those positions.

This process unfolded through four connected movements: absence, search, confusion, and readjustment. Participants first experienced an absence of self-mapping under a double constraint: old and dense local relationships and Seoul-centered standards of success. Dense local relationships often located young people through past images, family backgrounds, reputation, and local expectations, while Seoul-centered norms made it difficult for them to imagine a desirable future within the rural region. Participants then searched for possible self-maps through leaving, achievement, return, in-migration, and cautious involvement in local activities. In this process, the rural region was no longer experienced simply as a place to escape from or return to. It became a place where young adults began to reconsider the relationships, problems, and possibilities in which they were situated.

However, participants’ self-maps became confused as youth policies, local projects, performance-based funding, unstable work, unpaid or underpaid community labor, and expectations within local networks generated tensions between meaningful engagement and sustainable life. The language of community, public good, and local engagement gave participants a sense of purpose, but it also required them to prove, perform, and sustain that purpose under precarious conditions. Speaking out required careful calculation of relational consequences, while meaningful activity did not always provide the material or emotional conditions needed to continue. Participants later readjusted their self-maps by naming discomfort, reinterpreting relationships and community, and renegotiating the range of participation, distance, speech, silence, continuation, and withdrawal they could sustain. This readjustment did not produce stable settlement or final resolution. Rather, it involved an ongoing recalibration of what relationships could be maintained, what activities could be continued, and under what conditions one could live without losing oneself.

Theoretically, the study interprets relational self-mapping as a process in which identity and agency intersect. Identity refers to the ways rural young adults sense and interpret how they are located and read within relationships, while agency refers to the ways they seek possible directions of life and practice from within those locations. The analysis shows that this intersection takes the forms of fixation, loosening, collision, and coordination. By developing the concept of relational self-mapping, the study reconsiders identity capital from a relational perspective, extends discussions of agency to ordinary and often invisible practices in rural life, and specifies the temporal and relational dimensions of agency within rural young adults’ life-course experiences.

This study contributes to rural youth studies and social welfare research by reframing rural mobility and staying as a life-course process of relational self-mapping rather than as a demographic outcome or a fixed settlement trajectory. It also suggests that policies for rural young adults should move beyond settlement rates, project performance, and population indicators, and instead support the relational and regional conditions through which young people can continue to redraw their self-maps and sustain their lives.
