This study investigates the long-term impact of South Korea’s Technology-Based Special Listing system on corporate investment risk and examines the underlying mechanism from the perspective of information asymmetry. The system allows firms with strong technological potential to go public without meeting traditional financial requirements, thereby facilitating access to capital markets. However, this institutional feature may also amplify initial uncertainty and information asymmetry for newly listed firms.
To empirically test this, we construct a sample of firms listed on the KOSDAQ market between 2014 and 2022 and use stock return volatility as a proxy for investment risk. The empirical analysis employs a regression framework controlling for key firm characteristics, including size, leverage, profitability, cash flow, and growth opportunities. To capture the dynamic evolution of risk, we measure volatility over different post-listing horizons (1-year, 2-year, and 3-year periods).
The results show that technology-based special listing firms exhibit significantly higher stock return volatility than general IPO firms during the first year after listing. This elevated initial risk can be attributed to weaker financial stability and higher information asymmetry associated with firms whose valuation relies heavily on intangible assets. However, the volatility gap between the two groups decreases over time, particularly during the second and third years after listing, indicating that market uncertainty is gradually resolved.
A series of robustness tests—including market-adjusted volatility, idiosyncratic risk measures, industry-restricted samples, propensity score matching, and one-to-one matching—confirm the consistency of these findings. Additional analysis reveals that while financial conditions do not significantly improve over time, information asymmetry is substantially reduced, suggesting that the decline in volatility is primarily driven by improvements in the information environment rather than fundamental financial performance.
To complement the empirical findings, a limited case analysis is conducted focusing on firms’ information disclosure practices. The results highlight that voluntary disclosure plays a critical role in reducing information asymmetry. Firms that actively provide timely and forward-looking information through voluntary disclosures tend to build market trust and achieve more stable performance, whereas firms relying solely on mandatory disclosures or providing limited information tend to experience persistent uncertainty and weaker market outcomes.
Overall, this study demonstrates that while technology-based special listing firms face higher initial investment risk, such risk declines over time as information asymmetry is alleviated. These results provide important implications for policymakers and investors by emphasizing the critical role of information environment quality in the effectiveness of listing regulation relaxation.
