    ABSTRACT
The True Self in the Thought of Francis of Assisi and Viktor
    Frankl:
    A Comparative Study
This study investigates the underlying causes of persistent conflict and
    relational
fragmentation manifested within the self, interpersonal
relationships, and broader social and international communities, while
seeking the foundational source through which such divisions may be
reconciled. Wars and interpersonal conflicts — whether within families,
schools, workplaces, or wider communities — ultimately originate in the
individual’s perception and understanding of the self. Accordingly, the
study proposes that only an integrated and authentic sense of self can
transform alienation and conflict into relationships grounded in love.
To this end, the study conceptualizes “authentic self hood” through the
notion of the “true self” and comparatively examines two historical figures
who may be understood as having attained an awareness of this true self.
The study first examines Francis of Assisi (1181/1182–1226), a seminal
figure in Christian spirituality and founder of the Franciscan Order, and
subsequently turns to Viktor Frankl (1905–1997), an Austrian psychiatrist
and founder of logotherapy. Through a comparative analysis of their
spiritual and intellectual discourses, the study identifies significant
convergences regarding the discovery and realization of the true self.
With respect to Francis, the study demonstrates that the saint’s
persistent emphasis on love represented a path toward union with Jesus
Christ, whom he sought to imitate throughout his life, and that this union
itself constituted the realization of the true self. In the case of Frankl,
the study examines the concept of “logos” within logotherapy — his
representative psychotherapeutic approach — and argues that logos
signifies not merely “existential meaning”, but rather an “ultimate
transcendent meaning” grounded in love itself, within which the true self
    finds its foundation.
The study further concludes that the common conceptual foundation
shared by the two thinkers lies precisely in the notion of logos. For
Francis, logos is identified with Jesus Christ as the incarnate Logos and
divine love, whereas for Frankl, logos is understood primarily as love
itself. A significant distinction nevertheless emerges in their respective
interpretations. Although both thinkers invoke logos, Francis approaches it
from an explicitly theological perspective centered on the personal God
revealed in Jesus Christ, whereas Frankl refrains from explicitly affirming
either religion or the existence of God, instead interpreting the deepest
spiritual dimension of the human person as an a priori capacity for love
    inherent within all humanity.
Despite these differences, the study argues that the love residing
within the deepest dimension of the human spirit may be understood as a
fundamentally shared reality in both thinkers. Moreover, because love
functions as a universally intelligible horizon of human relationality that
transcends religious boundaries, the discovery of the true self through
love possesses both openness and universality, rendering this path
accessible regardless of religious affiliation. From this perspective, the
study suggests that Christian spirituality and psychology should not be
regarded as mutually exclusive domains, but rather as dialogical and
complementary disciplines capable of constructive interdisciplinary
    engagement and mutual enrichment.
Finally, the study proposes several implications. First, recognizing that
one’s authentic identity, or true self, is grounded in love — conceptualized
here as logos — may contribute significantly to identity formation and the
enhancement of self-esteem. Second, through the practice of
self-transcendence and altruistic openness, which constitute essential
qualities of love, individuals may overcome self-centeredness and restore
relationships characterized not by conflict and fragmentation, but by
    mutual love and communal harmony.
