This study aims to explore first-year college students’experiences of high school course selection and college major choice, focusing on how motivational and environmental factors are interpreted and constrained in the major selection process, and to derive implications for students’ career and educational trajectories. To achieve this purpose, the study addressed the following research questions: (1) What characterizes students’ experiences of course selection during high school? (2) What characterizes their experiences of selecting a college major during high school? (3) How are high school course selection and college major choice related? Five first-year students enrolled in four-year universities who had experienced both processes during high school participated in this study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using a qualitative case study methodology.
The findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, students’ experiences with high school course selection yielded seven categories and sixteen subcategories, which reflected their perceptions of adequate or inadequate course offerings and guidance, their active engagement in information seeking, their reliance on personal characteristics and goals in making course-related decisions, their dissatisfaction with elective course instruction, their efforts to compensate for instructional shortcomings, and their changes in career awareness following elective course participation. Second, students’ experiences of choosing a college major during high school produced five categories and fifteen subcategories, including perceptions of sufficient or insufficient support from the school, active information exploration, decision-making grounded in personal traits and objectives, and dissatisfaction with elective course instruction. Third, students’ perceptions of the relationship between high school course selection and college major choice were categorized into three areas and six subcategories: recognizing course selection as a meaningful opportunity for career exploration, acknowledging the usefulness of course-taking experiences for major-related and general academic learning, and identifying the need for a course selection system that is more explicitly aligned with students’ career pathways.
Based on the findings of this study, several implications for high school education and career guidance can be identified. First, the results indicate the necessity of establishing a more systematic and structured system for providing information on course selection so that students are able to choose courses in accordance with their interests and aptitudes. To achieve this, schools should offer courses that reflect students’ current stage of career development and provide more individualized counseling and guidance. In addition, expanding collaboration among schools and with local communities is required to widen the range of available elective courses and to reduce disparities in course offerings across schools. Second, the study highlights the importance of operating a coherent and well-developed curriculum that enables high school elective-course experiences to be meaningfully connected to university education. It is essential to ensure that students have sufficient opportunities for career exploration prior to selecting courses, and that elective classes are designed in ways that encourage students to reflect on their future careers, consider potential majors. Third, the findings emphasize the need to strengthen the linkage between high school course selection, college major choice, and the broader college admissions system. Improving the alignment between high school curricula and admission policies will help minimize the confusion students often experience in their career decision-making process due to frequent changes in the admissions system.
Keywords : High School Course Selection, College Major Choice, Student Experiences, First-Year University Students, Qualitative Case Study
The significance of this study lies in its qualitative examination of students who have directly experienced both high school course selection and college major choice—an area in which empirical research remains limited. By exploring the psychological and environmental characteristics observed in students’ career decision-making processes, the study provides a detailed understanding of how high school course selection and major choice are related and how they influence each other. These findings contribute meaningful insights into the design of career education programs and the development of school curricula that more effectively support students’ decision-making regarding their academic and career pathways.
