The purpose of the present study was to investigate how differences in the conceptual mapping structures of metonymy and metaphor are reflected in patterns of meaning activation during the processing of figurative emotional expressions. Previous research on figurative language processing has primarily focused on which meaning-literal or figurative-is accessed first, or whether figurative expressions require additional cognitive costs. However, comparatively little attention has been paid to how structural differences in conceptual mapping across types of figurative expressions shape the organization of meaning representations and the dynamics of meaning activation. Addressing this gap, the present study approached figurative language processing not in terms of the speed of order of meaning access, but from the perspective of representational structure and patterns of competition among meanings.
To this end, three experiments employing a hybrid maze task were conducted to examine whether figurative emotional expressions-specifically metonymic and metaphorical expressions-differ in how meaning activation unfolds when the same expression is interpreted literally or figuratively depending on context.
Across all studies, interference effects were assessed by examining whether contextually inappropriate but semantically related distractor words interfered with participants’ selection of target words.
Study 1 focused on metonymic emotional expressions. The results revealed that interference effects from literal-meaning-related distractor words emerged only in the figurative-meaning condition, whereas no such interference was observed in the literal-meaning condition. This asymmetrical pattern suggests that because metonymy is based on a within-domain mapping, accessing the figurative emotional meaning automatically activates the literal meaning associated with physiological or bodily states. In contrast, when the expression is interpreted literally, activation of the figurative emotional meaning is not obligatory, resulting in the absence of interference effects.
Study 2 examined metaphorical emotional expressions using the same analytical framework. In contrast to metonymy, metaphorical expressions showed interference effects in both the literal-meaning and figurative-meaning conditions. This pattern suggest that metaphor, which relies on cross-domain mapping, involves a process of comparing and aligning meanings across domains. As a result, meaning construction may involve parallel activation of semantically related information, rather than the immediate suppression of non-selected meanings depending on context. However, because Studies 1 and 2 did not fully control for stimulus composition or the degree of semantic relatedness of distractor words, the observed differences between metonymy and metaphor could not be conclusively attributed to differences in conceptual mapping matrix alone.
To address these limitations, Study 3 directly compared metonymic and metaphorical emotional expressions under identical experimental conditions with systematic control over stimulus properties and distractor relatedness.
Expression type (metonymic vs. metaphorical) and distractor relatedness (related vs. unrelated) were manipulated within participants, while the intended meaning of the expression within the sentence (literal vs. figurative) was manipulated between participants. The results showed that metaphorical expressions did not yield significant interference effects in either meaning condition, whereas metonymic expressions produced robust interference effects only in the figurative-meaning condition. This pattern indicates that the within-domain mapping of metonymy leads to unidirectional activation from figurative meaning to literal meaning during figurative interpretation. In contrast, the cross-domain mapping of metaphor allows the degree of meaning activation to be modulated by factors such as conceptual distance and semantic relatedness, resulting in more flexible and conditional activation patterns.
Taken together, the findings provide converging evidence that differences in conceptual mapping between metonymy and metaphor systematically shape the organization of meaning representations and the dynamics of meaning activation in figurative emotional expression processing. Metonymy, grounded in within-domain mapping, exhibits asymmetrical and automatic activation from figurative meaning to literal meaning, whereas metaphor, grounded in cross-domain mapping, shows condition-dependent modulation of meaning activation. These results extend existing accounts of figurative language processing beyond explanations based solely on processing cost or meaning type, and instead highlight the need to reconceptualize models of figurative language comprehension in terms of conceptual mapping structures and representational organization.
