This paper investigates the reorganization of perception in terms of the screen’s mode of appearance, focusing on the perceiving subject’s distracted perception. Distracted perception refers to a fragmented mode of perceptual experience distinct from immersion or concentration, and is closely linked to contemporary experiences of the screen as a medium for representing images. The screen’s mode of appearance refers to the various forms in which the screen presents itself, including the images it represents, its material properties such as size and aspect ratio, and medium-specific properties.
Since the 19th century, the screen has been integrated into devices for visual entertainment and has evolved into its contemporary forms through changes in material composition, aspect ratios, and curvature. Contemporary screens have undergone personalization and miniaturization, becoming widely owned media, and users can control them through interaction. The screen-facing subject stands before a flat display and watches its surface the images appearing on it. The perceiving subject facing the screen takes on various names, such as audience, spectator, and user, and exhibits diverse forms of viewing depending on the characteristics of the medium.
Today, amid shifts in the media environment, the spectator has moved away from collective viewing and confronts personalized screens, where they can decide when to pause and resume. Yet the basic arrangement in which the screen and its spectator face one another still raises questions about how meaning is produced within this encounter. The subject-screen relation is organized by a structure of frontality, and the perceiving subject’s orientation extends beyond the screen’s rectangular plane and frame toward the world that the screen mediates.
Distraction refers to a perceptual state in which attention shifts rapidly while the subject is released from immersive absorption in a single object. Rather than simply indicating inattention or a failure of immersion, distraction names a historically specific pattern of perception associated with modernity. Siegfried Kracauer suggests that the ‘Movie Palace’ can rupture an illusory totality and disclose material reality as a surface-image, while Walter Benjamin argues that modes of reception in distraction are necessary to adapt to the fundamental transformation of perception in modern society. Siegfried Kracauer and Walter Benjamin shared a common interest in interpreting the spirit of their time by examining the society, culture, and media. Jean-François Lyotard’s ‘acinema’, Raymond Williams’s television-based concept of ‘flow’, and Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin’s theory of ‘remediation’ all attend to new media and to the accompanying tendencies toward decentralization that have emerged in the wake of modernity.
Today, the ubiquity of screens and their increasing orientation toward distraction offers a critical point of departure for analyzing distracted perception in screen-based art. The repetition of parts and fragments, segments and connections articulated through epic theatre, montage, and cinema, aligns with attempts to apprehend the world with clarity. Issues about the location and arrangement of the screen lead to a discussion of parallel montage across multiple screens, producing simultaneous distraction and consideration of the environment surrounding the screen.
Through distracted perception mediated by the screen, the spectator can detect differences between images and attend to the intervals between them. In this way, the subject reorganizes perception through participatory and performative modes of viewing and can be reconstituted as a new spectator.
