This study aims to reinterpret the spatial concepts of Eastern philosophy through contemporary metal sculptural language by employing the symbolic structure of the gate(門) and the traditional color system of Obangsaek(五方色). The research transforms the philosophical meanings and symbolic framework inherent in Obangsaek into a modern visual vocabulary, while using the gate’s dual character boundary and passage as a means to articulate spatial experience.
The gate in this study is not regarded merely as an architectural entrance but as a symbolic device that mediates between interior and exterior, the real and the transcendental, and the material and the spiritual. It functions as a central sculptural element that invites viewers to experience space. Conceptually, the research draws upon comparative studies of Eastern and Western spatial theories and focuses on the non-dualistic worldview of Eastern thought, which understands space through relationships, circulation, and generative processes. The philosophical foundations of 道, 氣, 心 serve as a fundamental basis for constructing space in this study. Accordingly, space is understood not as a fixed physical background but as a generative field where emotion, memory, and consciousness intersect. Obangsaek is applied to metal sculpture to integrate color, structure, and space into a unified form. By combining the symbolic logic of Obangsaek its associations with the five directions, four seasons, and the Five Elements—with the structure of the gate, the work bridges tradition and contemporaneity. The five colors (blue, red, yellow, white, and black) each carry directional and psychological significance and, when merged with the materiality of metal, produce a symbolic space in which the material and immaterial coexist. Through this integration, the work constructs a cyclical narrative of “birth–passion–embrace–fruition–renewal,” expanding the worldview embodied in Obangsaek into visual form. As a sculptural archetype rooted in the 道, 氣, 心 spatial structure, the study adopts the “house” as a symbolic representation of lived human experience. The house serves as a boundary between inner and outer realms and as an intimate space embedded with memory and identity. It is not approached merely as a visual or formal enclosure but as a sculptural entity that embodies life and consciousness. In this context, space becomes a fundamental field through which individuals perceive themselves within the world. The house, as presented in this work, represents the most essential and tangible site within expansive spatial discourse and becomes a symbolic form through which personal memory and universal symbolism are explored. For the analysis of preceding artists dealing with the themes of gate, space, and memory, this study refers to Monika Sosnowska, Ahn Kyuchul, Choi Jeonghwa, and Vakki. While these artists primarily focus on structural or sociocultural interpretations, this study distinguishes itself by integrating Obangsaek with Eastern philosophical thought to construct an inner, generative spatial structure. In conclusion, this research reinterprets the spiritual dimension of traditional color and the mediating symbolism of the gate through contemporary metal sculpture, demonstrating the potential for extending Eastern cosmology into modern visual art. By employing the gate as a symbolic mediator, the work proposes a space where the inner and outer, human and world, sentiment and reason converge. Through Obangsaek, it further visualizes the principles of harmony and coexistence central to Eastern philosophy, establishing meaningful connections with contemporary art.
