This study estimates the effects of Criminal Justice Contact (CJC) and Employment Status (EMP) on depressive symptoms in adulthood from a life-course perspective. As life-course trajectories intersect with cumulative disadvantage, contacts with criminal justice institutions—such as arrest, conviction, and incarceration—restrict social opportunities and weaken human capital through stigma as well as institutional and social exclusion, thereby precipitating transitions into unstable employment or unemployment. Conversely, unstable employment conditions increase the likelihood of criminal justice contact through the accumulation of weakened control and supervision, as well as economic stress. This reciprocal cycle is difficult to capture adequately using single-time-point, unidirectional associations. Accordingly, this study adopts an analytical approach that accounts for the simultaneous changes in time-varying exposures. These trajectories do not operate solely between the two variables but also exert downstream effects on depression. Through stress processes and stigma, criminal justice contact itself may induce or exacerbate depressive and anxiety symptoms, and for some individuals, criminal institutionalization may extend into reinstitutionalization within the medical and health-care system. Low-quality employment, such as short-term or nonstandard jobs, intensifies instability and social isolation, weakens the protective effects typically associated with employment, and ultimately has adverse consequences for mental health. In sum, the trajectories formed by criminal justice contact and employment status jointly shape levels of depression in adulthood. Existing research and policy practices have largely focused on the effects of incarceration among forms of criminal justice contact, thereby overlooking the micro-level exercise of power that occurs at the most widespread points of contact, such as arrest and early police encounters. Moreover, prior studies have often operationalized employment using simplified measures—such as employment status or weeks worked—without adequately accounting for heterogeneity across employment types or appropriately adjusting for time-varying confounding. To address these limitations, this study employs longitudinal data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (NLSY97) and applies Marginal Structural Models (MSMs) with Inverse Probability of Treatment Weighting (IPTW). Missing data are addressed using Multiple Imputation (MI). The results indicate that criminal justice contact significantly increases depressive symptoms in itself, while differences by contact intensity (arrest, conviction, incarceration) are not statistically significant, suggesting that the effect is independent of hierarchical severity. Regarding employment, outcomes differ by employment type rather than employment status per se, with wage employment exhibiting a protective effect against depression relative to unemployment. Subgroup analyses further reveal that effect sizes vary by gender, race/ethnicity, and citizenship status, indicating that individuals from groups for whom criminal justice contact is less expected experience greater psychological shock when such contact occurs. Overall, criminal justice contact and employment status operate as factors that influence mental health both independently and jointly, with their effects differing across social subgroups.
