‘Site-specific performance’ is an aesthetic practice that artists move throughout the urban environment, creatively utilizing the city's material civilization as a performance resource. What is created through this process is ‘commons’. ‘Site-specific performance’ is a process of instantaneously creating commons by utilizing the various characteristics of a site, specifically its materiality. Artists improvise and simultaneously weave together the relationships between materials located in a specific location, and assemble these materials into performative agents.
However, the problem is that the existing commons research that has been conducted so far does not mention this liquid commons at all. Existing commons activities are basically taking a strategy of creating an alternative social space in order not to be eroded from neoliberal urbanization and commodification of urban space, and it is typical to build commons on real territory and negotiate various boundaries outside the place within it to form common norms, communities, and governance. In other words, existing commons is very fixed to a place and occurs and is mainly engaged in activities to protect the place or preserve it permanently.
Therefore, the researcher seeks to expand the existing discussion of commons and propose a new material dimension. The researcher envisions commons as something that arises from the ‘characteristics of a place’, yet whose characteristics are constantly evolving. Artists establish a base, briefly secure a foothold, and then move elsewhere to establish yet another, rapidly progressing through the process of territorialization and deterritorialization—a guerrilla commons. These flexible commons utilize the entire city as a ‘shared resource’ through the process of constantly reconfiguring and renegotiating the connections and links between numerous site-specific materials. From this perspective, the researcher aims to completely deconstruct the materiality of existing commons and propose an aesthetic practice that allows anyone, anywhere to instantly create commons. In short, ‘site-specific performance’ is an aesthetic practice that utilizes all materials in the urban environment to capture the excluded others, niche spaces, and urban narratives hidden beneath the surface of the city, ‘commoning’ them (creating a commons) to return ‘the right to the city’ to citizens.
The researcher seeks to theorize the mechanisms for creating flexible commons based on the materiality of the city through ‘site-specific performance’, primarily invoking Deleuze and Guattari. Deleuze and Guattari's concepts of ‘rhizomatic assemblage’ and ‘becoming’ are ontologically complex systems of thought that generate new events within the entanglements of horizontally interconnected materials. Building on this foundation, this research philosophically examines the essence of liquid space. Borrowing from the theories of relational spatialists who narrow this Deleuzian way of thinking to the level of actual urban space, the researcher examines how rhizomatic assemblages are generated in real space and how place is thus relationally created. From the perspective of ‘relational space’, space is a ‘nature-culture continuum’, where countless ‘matters’ are relationally intertwined across multiple spatio-temporal dimensions and constantly interconstituted. At this time, matter is another alter ego of mine, referring to ‘others’ and ‘we’. In this study, the researcher operationally defines all things existing in urban environments, including humans and non-humans, as ‘urban materials’ or ‘urban beings’.
This study examines a guerrilla commoning method in which creators create relational spaces by emergently assembling the relationship between the urban materials placed specifically in the actual urban field. The researcher analyzes how creators draw urban features, audiences, artists, unspecified passers-by, animals and plants that were placed at that moment in urban space into the context of the performance, place them as performing subjects with agency, and immediately weave them into symbiotic relationships to build ‘becoming-with’. Furthermore, the researcher examines the emergent effects of these relational entanglements with urban materials, exploring how new urban spatial and temporal sensibilities and spatial perception systems can be formed through ‘site-specific performance’.
Focusing on the various projects undertaken by creators of ‘site-specific performance’, the researcher aims to examine their performance production methods that transform the urban environment into a stage from a user experience(UX) perspective.
The main research findings are as follows: ‘Site-specific performance’ creates new performative events through the rhizomatic assemblages of urban materials existing in the urban environment. The performative power of urban materials utilized in ‘site-specific performance’ is mainly found in the countless spatial traces and narratives of numerous others inherent in public spaces, interstitial spaces, idle spaces, spaces where something is concealed or contradictory, and spaces accumulating several temporal layers. Urban materials that are newly connected and linked within the performance storytelling momentarily unleash the performative potential in the rhizomatic assemblages. The performative agency of urban materials, along with the traces of the lives of the marginalized, awakens their otherness and reveals their power as ‘thing-power’ that implicitly conveys social messages. The way creators reconstruct urban materiality through performance involves immediately bringing the urban materials that lay there into the performance context, creating new relational assemblages. In this way, the process of temporarily occupying a specific place and then moving it to another place to reconstruct the relationships among urban materials continues. Through this aesthetic approach, creators immediately transform the atmosphere and texture of a specific place. In ‘site-specific performance’, a multi-species assembly is formed, loosely connected with the community members—local merchants, local children, and nonhuman beings. This assembly transforms into co-performers with agency who co-create the performances, forming an ‘inoperative community’ where we rediscover our inner ‘self’.
Performative events arising from the relational entanglement of urban materials progress into transitional and transformative states, generating new spatial and sensory effects that transcend spatio-temporal dimensions. ‘Site-specific performance’ occurring within the urban environment has porous boundaries, allowing countless unexpected situations to intervene within the performance. In these moments, creators naturally introduce improvisational situations into the performance scene, instantly transforming relationships with others and fostering a new perception of spatial texture. Furthermore, creators often subvert improvisational situations and incorporate them into their performances, twisting the regulatory framework and standards of public space to playfully cross boundaries with the audience. In ‘site-specific performance’, the method of temporarily transforming the sense of urban space and time is achieved through Jacques Rancière's ‘repartitioning of the sensible’, which can be embodied in the technique of ‘borrowed view’. This sensory re-framing summons the previously unseen, unheard, and unfelt others within the city and repositions them as subjects possessing the agency of performance, thereby forming a new system of urban sensibility. In ‘site-specific performance’, technological elements embody agency as ‘thing-power’ through the organic intertwining of urban materials placed in a specific space with the audience's body. Here, the technological entity generates ‘affect’ through its ‘intra-action’ with the human body. The ‘QR code’ devices and ‘Augmented Reality(AR)’ technologies used in performances possess the capacity of ‘thing-power’, overlaying virtual layers onto real space, allowing the audience to reinterpret the narratives of others through various sensory modalities. Furthermore, the human body mutates into a ‘post-human hybrid’ that emotionally responds to the technological body in real time, and technology transforms into a co-performer that interacts with the human body and creates performances together.
The academic implications of this study lie not in viewing ‘site-specific performance’ as a distinct art form, but in reinterpreting it as an urban commoning practice that aesthetically restores the city's shared resources as commons and reawakens the coexistence of ‘becoming-with’ through constant connection and establishing equal relationships with surrounding beings.
Furthermore, this paper completely reframes existing discussions of urban commons and proposes a novel approach to reconfiguring the materiality of the commons. The commons described by the researcher goes beyond creating alternative spaces in response to neoliberal urbanization. It signifies an assemblage practice that creatively utilizes materiality, or the characteristics of a site, to form new relational entanglements. Guerrilla commons can be viewed as liquid commons, characterized by relational assemblages of urban materials that leverage ‘site-specificity’ to repeatedly deploy and dismantle in various locations.
The spatial implications of this study lie in proposing a spatial epistemology that allows for a new understanding of the city through the aesthetic practice of producing commons. Borrowing Deleuzian spatial theories, which exhibit a similar way of thinking to the ‘rhizomatic assemblage’ perspective, the researcher theorizes the liquid commoning method created by generating relational space. In this way, the guerrilla commons through artistic practice creates a ‘sensory city’ that responds to urban materiality, inoperative community, and otherness, along with new spatio-temporal dimensions generated by technological implementation.
The social implications of this study are that the right to the city, restored through ‘site-specific performance’, extends beyond the human scale to a ‘relational community’ where people connect and interact with numerous material resources of the city. In other words, the right to the city should be understood as a commoning practice that acknowledges the agency of the various forms of existence that constitute the urban environment and embraces and connects with them rather than rejecting them.
The second social implication is the need for institutional support programs that provide the creators of ‘site-specific performances’ with the vacant or idle spaces created by urbanization. Through this, the artists can create new sensory experiences in the city by capturing and discovering the urban narrative, other people’s voices, and their traces from the artists’ lens. Furthermore, existing public projects supporting ‘site-specific performances’ need to establish standards for evaluating the qualitative value of commoning proposed in this study beyond performance-based systems.
The third social implication is that commoning-style cultural and artistic projects, which foster a sense of community by utilizing shared urban resources, should be continuously implemented at the public level to enhance citizens' awareness of ‘cultural democracy’ and ‘cultural sensitivity’.
Finally, the social implications of this study lie in discussing the future direction of urban planning through the communal value of ‘site-specific performance’. Urban planning should not simply view urban space as the property or utility of specific entities. Instead, it should respect the diversity of beings accumulated within the city and explore alternative practices of ‘becoming-with’, which re-evaluate the others who coexist with us through shared experiences. This is a time to rediscover a sense of community.
