My artistic practice does not follow a linear process; instead, it responds to an impulsive drive that functions independently and twists spontaneously in ways I cannot foresee. Rather than suggesting a lack of integration in my painting habits, this reflects an intense desire for the act of painting, possession, and aesthetic pursuit—akin to an excessive appetite that longs to devour everything in sight. My painting time resembles that of an organism eating, drinking, and reacting, in that the body is already engaged in the act before making a judgment on what is being painted. Under this organic temporality, where the chronological order of time is reversed and the motive for painting is only realized after confronting the resulting image, the act of painting closely mirrors the process of ingestion. To satisfy the hunger of desire, I incessantly shove things into my mouth, gazing at the world as if tasting it, doubting, and pulverizing it. The lingering aftertaste then recalls the state prior to consumption, functioning as a mechanism that summons the primal desire.
Starting from Adrienne Rich's epigraph, this thesis proposes the concept of 'suspended play' as a thread through the overall practice of painting. This reveals the spontaneity and the resulting playfulness inherent in the work—starting and ending at unexpected moments, much like a child’s play which lacks a clear reason or sequence. Through Guattari’s concept of the 'desiring-machine,' I analyze this mechanism more closely, observing the technique that theatrically enjoys immaturity while delaying conclusions through children's Fort-Da play and 'monster-making' play.
Furthermore, this study moves beyond vision-centered representation or imitation to focus on tactile visuality. By deriving the attributes of the "unit" from the tesserae of Byzantine mosaics, I clarify the sensory continuity between the overall form of a painting and its material units. This extends the tactile interaction between touching and believing into the realm of painting. Accordingly, I reveal the way units exist in my paintings by extending the traces of paint that fall away, failing to represent a referent. Through this 'masticatory' movement, the painting acquires unique spatiotemporal characteristics. This thesis analyzes cases of the autobiographical production process at work in painting. Drawing from Freud’s concept of afterwardness (Nachträglichkeit), I present a spatiotemporal model of my painting conceptualized through signs and indexes.
Ultimately, this research suggests a methodology that analyzes the mutual influence between each stage within a non-ending, kinetic process, rather than converging painting toward 'completion.' This eventually proposes a subverted possibility of 'seeing'—moving beyond a belief in the world I gaze upon or its fragmentation, toward a state where I myself can become the object of the world’s gaze.
