Persistence refers to sustained and repeated effort directed toward goal attainment. Because goal pursuit often involves encountering difficulties and requires prolonged engagement, persistence is a crucial component of successful goal achievement. However, unproductive persistence that does not contribute to goal progress may hinder efficient goal pursuit, particularly given the limited nature of motivational and cognitive resources and the potential negative effects of repeated failure on well-being and goal commitment. When continued effort fails to yield progress, exploring alternative means that better support overarching goals may be necessary. From this perspective, effective goal pursuit requires not only tenacity but also flexibility in goal-directed behavior. Accordingly, this study extends prior research that has primarily emphasized the quantitative aspects of persistence by examining the qualitative nature of adaptive persistence in learning contexts through experimental designs.
This study investigated adaptive persistence in learning contexts with the following emphases. First, drawing on the perspective of goal hierarchies, adaptive persistence was conceptualized within problem-solving contexts by distinguishing between higher-level task goals and lower-level subtask goals. Specifically, the study examined whether task switching, which may appear as disengagement at the subtask level, can function as persistence toward the overarching task goal. Second, whereas prior research on adaptive self-regulation and goal adjustment has largely focused on adult samples, this study targeted elementary school students to examine whether the benefits of flexible goal pursuit and task switching also apply to school-aged learners. Third, in light of the predominance of self-report methodologies in existing research, this study employed experimental designs that reflect elementary students' academic contexts to examine the functional role of task switching when learners encounter difficulties during task performance. Fourth, this study aimed to explore situational factors influencing learners' switching decisions in the face of difficulty. Based on goal-theoretic accounts of goal adjustment and disengagement, goal progress and cost-benefit considerations were operationalized as the timing of encountering a challenging task and switching cost, respectively, and were experimentally manipulated to examine their effects on learners' choices. Fifth, the study examined whether the adaptive functions of task switching differ according to individual motivational characteristics. Focusing on achievement goal orientations as a key motivational factor influencing persistence, the study investigated whether patterns of task switching vary as a function of learners' achievement goal orientations.
Two sub-studies were conducted. Study 1 examined learners' choice patterns as a function of the timing of encountering a challenging task and switching cost. Study 2 examined adaptive persistence as a function of switching availability and learners' achievement goal orientations when learners encountered a challenging task. Participants were fifth- and sixth-grade elementary school students, with 205 students in Study 1 and 320 students in Study 2. All experimental tasks were designed as mathematical problem-solving activities to reflect elementary school curricula.
The main findings and their implications are as follows. In Study 1, no learners chose to quit the overall task when confronted with an unsolvable problem. Instead, they either attempted the problem or chose to switch to the next task. No significant differences in answering versus switching choices were observed across the four experimental conditions. Although differences among experimental conditions were not found, these results indicate that when task switching is available, encountering an unsolvable problem does not necessarily lead to disengagement from the overall task, suggesting that task switching may function to prevent premature withdrawal from task engagement.
In Study 2, switching availability had a significant main effect on the proportion of time spent on the challenging task relative to total task time. Because time spent on an unsolvable task does not contribute to goal progress, this finding indicates that switching availability reduced unproductive persistence and supported more efficient goal pursuit. Furthermore, interactions between switching availability and learners' achievement goal orientations were significant for both persistence on the challenging task and total task persistence. Specifically, when mastery goal orientation was low, both persistence on the challenging task and overall task persistence were lower under switching-available conditions. For learners with high performance-approach goal orientation, total task persistence was higher when switching was not available, whereas persistence on the challenging task did not differ across conditions. These findings suggest that the meaning and function of task switching differ depending on learners' achievement goal orientations and highlight the importance of considering individual motivational differences when designing interventions to promote adaptive task persistence.
